Which Card, Which Card

Postby Xorand » Thu Dec 11, 2014 2:39 pm

Last night I went to return something to Target that I had purchased a couple weeks ago. I didn't have the box (no problem) or receipt. The clerk said if I bought it with credit card she could swipe the card and scan the product (we had to get another product in box to get the barcode) and she could issue a refund.

I generally carry six credit cards with me, so then I had to try to remember which I would have used there. I started handing cards to her one at a time, she'd swipe the card and scan the product - nope, not that one. Figures it would be the last card I tried. I forgot I was using my Chase Freedom that week to put a little usage on it since I'm not using it for rewards this quarter.

I'm sure after three or four cards she was probably wondering what kind of scam I might be trying to pull.

Or maybe she was thinking, "Wow, look at all the credit cards this one has! He can't even keep them all straight! I wonder how much debt he is in!" :ppp

I'm surprised I haven't had anyone say that to me yet. I carry most of my cards with me though I really want to start leaving a few of them at home.

Between the cards I have and the cards I plan to get in 2015, some will cease to have an obvious regular spending category. So I will probably send myself small Amazon gift cards or do numerous self-checkouts at the grocery store once every few months.

Edit: Although the last time I did self-checkout with two cards, an employee thought I was suspicious and tried to have me reenter (and pay again for) the items from my first purchase. Assuming I was a shoplifter, she grabbed the receipt in a rush and threw it away without looking at it. After I told her the receipt was mine, and I had already paid for the items, she then dug it out of the trash.

She apologized and was beet red in the face. I tried to tell her it was okay, but decided it was best to just leave quickly and not make more of a scene.

So maybe I'll just get Amazon emailed gift cards.
Love: IHG, Platinum, Sallie Mae, AA Plat, CSP
Like: Discover, ED, BCE, Hyatt, Arrival, Freedom
Might drop: BrooksBros, Prestige (Costco PC?)
Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold
Letting new accounts cool off since May
Really not sure what I'll add next or when

Actually believe it or not, that's not really uncommon. I swear, I've probably swiped 12 cards before, trying to pull someone transaction up. Now.. if you were trying to return like $600 worth of random stuff, and you didn't have a receipt, our LP Guy would probably come over, and ask you a few questions, lol ;)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Discover It $500 10/14. Capital One QS Visa $300 02/15, formerly Journey Visa Plat. 11/14.

I generally do that. The BCP for gas (3%) and groceries (6%) and the Chase Amazon for restaurants (2%). After that, though, it kinda depends on what I feel like pulling out and using. I guess I should standardize on the remaining cards' usages. My CSP should be in the mail today, so it will be the default for a while so I can rack up the $3,000 spend for the sign-up bonus.

And as recently as 3 years ago, she probably would have been right. Glad I'm past those days.
