I think I made a grave mistake

Postby Dsdyer » Fri Dec 05, 2014 1:46 pm

I have 2 cards. A Chase Freedom with $2,500 limit and a Discover IT with a $8,000 limit. Both are new cards.

I have some concern about places in my area not accepting Discover, so brilliant me decided I needed another Visa or even MasterCard. I applied with both Barclay and Citi. I did not get instant approval with either one.
I called Barclay's back door number this morning. They kept me on the phone a good hour. 3 different departments later I'm told to mail in everything but my underwear size.

My husband says don't do it, that's crazy.
I haven't called Citi back door yet. Afraid I'll get the same run around.
I think I got greedy and applied for too many too close together. What kind do damage have I done to myself?

It's not the end of the world. Worst case you have a couple inquiries on your report and don't get approved for either card. Did Barclays say why they need all the info? Are the having trouble verifying your address or questioning your income?

May as well call Citi. You've already applied. May as well find out where you stand with them. Could just be they need to verify info. All creditors are different.

You've taken a hard pull for each new card. The effects of these taper off relatively quickly and they fall completely off after 2 years.

If the applications lead to new accounts then you've also reduced your AAoA with each new account. However, you'll build this up again over time. Just responsibly manage and use these accounts. It's not the end of the world.

It's difficult to tell from your post if they just needed to verify information or if they had concerns with your credit. You've already submitted the applications and IMO you might as well go through with the process. Worst case is a pair of denials and you end up with hard pulls and no new accounts.

There's nothing to lose by calling them to see what's going on which I see you did but it would be helpful if we knew what they are specifically wanting from you. Maybe it's just verification from their part and that you might still get the cards. Even if you don't, it's not a big deal and you can always try again in a few months.

It would also seem that Barclay's is still thinking about giving you a card or they wouldn't ask for all of this. Is there anything for you to worry about with what they're requesting? For example, did you seriously overstate your income or something?

No I didn't overstate anything.

I think it's because I have 2 addresses. I explained 1 home we own and 1 I inherited. We have moved into my Grandmother's home and will be selling the other home.

They want a utility bill but it will be in my Grandmother's name. We have yet to have the opportunity to change it.

If this is the only issue then I don't think you have a lot to worry about. I wouldn't stress it. You've already taken the inquiries so I would just comply with what they're asking and include a letter explaining the situation. I know it seems like a lot, and it's on you whether or not you want to follow through. But really the worst they can say is no, and either way you will still be left with the inquiry.

Did you end up calling Citi to get a status update? We're they wanting similar info?

Yes I called Citi. All he said is they already mailed me a letter and just to wait for it.
I really wish I had just stuck with the 2 cards I already have.

Just got instant approval from Capitol One. The approval pop up did not give credit limit and it will take 7-10 days to get card.
Now I don't even want the other 2. Barclay didn't impress me with their customer service any way.

Well, if you weren't impressed with Barclay's customer service, you're in for a real treat with Capital One. I would've waited to see the outcome of the other two before you took on yet another hard pull, and for Capital One no less. They hard pull from all three bureaus. Personally I'd prefer the other two, or to just have gotten a CLI on the Freedom.
