One Card from Each Payment Network

Postby Michael » Thu Dec 04, 2014 4:23 pm

I am wondering who of you carries one card from each network (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, Discover), and why?

By "carry" I mean in the wallet, all at the same time.

Yup. My BOA and Barclay cards are both WMCs and I also carry my AMEX, VISA and Discover cards too. I also have 1 Visa Signature card.

While I have cards from the big four, I rarely carry all at the same time. Mostly due to limited wallet space. I try to carry what's applicable for what I'm doing, but I always have two American Express cards, and a visa at minimum.

I have all four plus a extra Visa that is a Signature. Each of them have their purpose. The Freedom and IT are for the rotating 5% cash back, the Sallie Mae is for the 5% on gas and groceries, the Amex is for Costco, and the Sapphire is for travel.
Discover IT - $5,700
Chase Freedom - $5,700
Costco Citi - $13,000
Sallie Mae - $4,000
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $6,000
Chase Sapphire Reserve - $19,500
Citi Double Cash - $6,500
Amex BCE - $13,000

FICOs: Discover (777), SallieMae (764), Amex (767), Citi (772)
FAKOs: CK- TU (760), EQ (760)

In most cases I only carry two cards, and there are other two non-bank cards that need to be always carried every day. Currently Citi Forward tends to stay a longer length of time than any other bank cards.

Citi Forward - 5x dining
Amex BCE - 3x groceries
Discover and Freedom are just to be taken advantage of rotating categories mostly.

When it's 1x category for any card, I prefer using Freedom than others. But sometimes I will just let the others stay in the wallet without worrying about the 1 point vs 1% cash back thing.

I am not concerned about acceptance, as usually I can have at least 1 Visa card. I don't think I have to carry cards from all networks to just enhance acceptance. I can pick 1 Visa + 1 non-Visa or 2 Visas to maximize returns.
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015
All EMV.

I carry all my cards. Originally it was because I wanted to be prepared for some random store that only accepted one network's cards.

Now, it's to maximize rewards and to have them all in one place. Also, if my wallet had 3 or 4 fewer pieces of plastic in it, things might start slipping loose.

Maybe I should keep one card for just emergencies (like my wallet being stolen), but it would be a tough decision. I guess my debit card would suffice, though.
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

I have one card from each with an extra Amex (Delta SkyMiles Gold).

Through my life I have seen businesses that only take one of these cards. Yes, even businesses that'll take Visa but not MasterCard or MasterCard but not Visa.

Day to day, I keep cash in my pocket and pay with that. I keep just a Discover and a MasterCard in my wallet and it's really just for the situation where I didn't drop by the ATM and get cash and, thus, use Discover to pay or, if they don't take Discover then my backup plan is the MasterCard.

The Visa and the Amexes stay in a drawer, not because I'm afraid I'll use them to buy stupid stuff and run up debt, but because I like to keep my wallet thin.

If I go out of town then Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and one of my Amexes (depending on what I'm doing) find a home in my wallet. Amex becomes my travel card and the rest are there mainly as a "just in case" because I'm hitting places I don't frequent. I still generally use cash on trips but it is just a bit less than normal day to day life.

I don't. I have no need. I do have cards from the four -- I just don't need to carry all of them. I select a card for a given purchase based on rewards, not payment network.

Instead of polling do whatever works for you.
