Bank of America charged me for late payment, even though I set up autopay

Postby rashmisarangi » Mon Sep 15, 2014 11:29 am

For my last statement, I had scheduled an automatic payment to be paid on the statement due date:
09/11/2014. Yesterday, I logged into BofA website to check the payment status. I saw that the scheduled
payment was not paid on the due date. Instead, I was charged penalty for failing to make payment.

I would call and ask them to waive the penalty fee because of the misunderstanding as to how their process works. You should be able to reach someone who will waive it for that.

If they did not tell you this, then yeah I'd be pretty pissed off too.

I called the BofA customer service and explained the issue. But they blamed me for not paying my due amount manually before the due date.

After the initial blame game, I decided to end this issue forever and requested him to close my Bank of America credit card account.

So the takeaway as I see it is that the auto pay will start "within 2 billing cycles". So, not knowing for sure for two months whether or not an automatic payment will be made, you make a manual payment, then they make an automatic payment. Now your checking account is potentially overdrawn from double payments. Nice.

Of course, scheduling for a week before the due date and watching to see if the payment is automatically made or not works, as well, but is inconvenient if you really want to stretch it to the due date to maximize your payment time.

Good riddance. No one deserves to have to suffer through such terrible, misleading customer service.

Due date was 9/11/14 right? I actually had one late payment before on my CapOne card, and I thought it was the end of the world cause it was going to show on my credit report. I didn't know until I pulled my report recently that they didn't show the late payment at all and I was still in good standing.

Judging based on the icon legend for account status per month, I think you have to be at least 30 days late for it to show on your report? I'm not sure, but my late payment basically doesn't exist per the report and it was a few days afters the due date like OP's. Only negative was that I paid the late fee.

What an airhead customer service rep. Glad you dumped them.

It's not reportable until it's 30 days late, right. And that's 30 days actually late, not 30 days past the statement date. They can, of course, charge you a late fee, and take whatever other action the terms and conditions say (boost your interest rate, take all your reward points, etc.), subject to statutory restriction.
