Approved... Then unapproved by Citibank

Postby PallasAthena » Sat Sep 13, 2014 8:25 pm

I want to share my story to see if anyone else has experienced something like this. In 2006, I filed for BK and it was discharged. Citibank was included in that. FF to 2014, my FICO score is 735, I have a good rate in my mortgage and car loans. Except for the 8 yo BK, I have no other negatives on my credit report.
For the second time in the last 30 days, I received an invitation to apply for Citibank's AAdvantage card. Today, I decided to apply. I received several congratulation emails saying my card will be in its way and to call the 800 number with my application number. When I called, the agent asked me to hold for 2 min while he reviewed my application. He came back on the line and said "Congratulations! You are approved for $10000 line of credit." I thanked him and he told me I'd receive the card in 7-10 business days. I requested an additional card for my spouse. Right before ending the call, he told me that he needed to check my application again. He came back on after 2 min and said it was denied and a letter explaining why would be sent.
I waited 30 min and called the reconciliation line. I spoke to a different agent and asked Citibank to reconsider their decision and give me a lower line of credit. The agent said that I have a BK less than 7 years. I pointed out that mine was 8 years out and that I've never missed a payment since. I also told him I had a loan from Citibank that was paid in full in 2012. After holding for 3 min, he came back on and told me that my credit report is marginal, I have several negatives with Citibank from the past, my BK is 7 years old and after 7 years, it will drop off, and that after a few years, my scores should go up. Based on the things he was telling me, that did not sound like my credit report at all! My negatives against Citibank was not making the min payments when I filed for BK.
I didn't want to argue with him so I thanked him and hung up.
My credit cards all have credit lines of $8000. My lowest credit score is 705. I have a mortgage and car loan. I owe nothing on my credit cards. All three credit reports show the 8 year old BK as my only negative and that's scheduled to drop in two years. I guess Citibank must have blacklisted me just like Amex. All I really wanted was travel rewards.
Anyone had anything similar happen?

Wow that's terrible. Did you try calling the executive office about what happened and explaining your situation fully to them? That's what I'd do if I was in your same situation. They were pretty helpful in helping me lower my APR on my card with them recently and seemed to have a lot more power and influence than your typical Citi customer service rep or analyst.

Hi Popamode, no I didn't. I think that at this point, I won't. I will just continue gardening. The ironic thing is that a few days ago, I received ANOTHER INVITATION to apply with a unique invitation number! What a joke!
It is terrible but at this point, I can look at it more calmly and say that I would rather take my business elsewhere.
Just wondering if anyone else had something similar happen to them. ouch!

I haven't had any experiences like that with Citi but they're not really my favorite prime lender either. I think there are better ones out there you can do business with anyway.

I would certainly move it up the chain, that is, if you want it....they'll give it to you but it'll take some effort. I had terrible credit in my early 20's due to a cell phone I lost and never checked my credit. Then, the good ole 7 year mark came up and I slowly built my score back up...Best of luck to you.
