I've got a chip on my shoulder...

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Sat Sep 13, 2014 1:54 am

...about not having one in my wallet.

But seriously, who else here hasn't yet gotten any card with an EMV chip?

I've got 2 Amex cards, a Chase, a Barclaycard, and a Discover. I know my particular cards are not geared towards travel, but these are still four of the better lenders and you'd think one of them might try to make chips standard on all cards.

I know I could call and request a card with a chip, at least for the Amexes, but international travel is still a few months away. More importantly, the EMV chip is like the cheapskate's Centurion - if you request an invitation, then you haven't really earned it.

I am a bit curious how long it would take to get an EMV card without specifically requesting one - or applying for one that always comes with one. And if a spring 2015 Arrival+ comes without one, I will be genuinely angry.

PRG and BCE definitely come with chips at least some of the time. What about Sallie Mae, Freedom, and It?

BofA secured cards come with them. They can't be that special. Eventually everyone will have them. It's just a slow migration for USA to catch up with the rest of the world.

BofA Sent me a Chipped card after my number was stolen in the PF Chang's hack.
Why are they still advertising for them in the Cash Back Deals section?

Amex PRG, I had to ask for a Chip when I PCed from Zinc. (Yes I'm a moron)
Discover doesn't offer Chip cards to US card holders.

On a side note, the packaging for the PRG was complete crap. The packaging was unsealed, and may have been a post card.
And yes, I did bitch Amex out for that one.

Discover's packaging was everything Amex's was supposed to be.

I have only seen very recent posts claiming the Chase Freedom is eligible for EMV. They said they asked for it and got it, and if CSR says there is no EMV available then transfer to supervisor and blah blah blah. I did see a photo of Freedom with chip, though, can't find that out right now.

For Discover I haven't heard of any information, as well as Capital One. Apparently as of today they are still issuing magnetic strip cards. The only thing I have heard of is by the end of 2015 ALL cards will come with chip, so probably we have to wait for a year to see some big progress.

I am waiting for AMEX to send a chip card to me, as I have heard by this month they will change all cards to chip versions. Still have not received anything, yet. My Citi Forward has a chip which is requested by me in this July.

After recent data breaches it seems like banks are still not worried about migrating.
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015
All EMV.

I asked to get the chip on my Amex and would like it if my Discover and Freedom cards got them as well. I do not see it as something prestigious. For me it is all about security and somewhat about it being cool to me. That is why I play around with my corporate badge with a chip on it more than I should. To OP I am not sure why you are so against asking for extra security on your cards. I see no reason why you need to "earn it".
Discover IT - $5,700
Chase Freedom - $5,700
Costco Citi - $13,000
Sallie Mae - $4,000

Citi Double Cash - $6,500
Amex BCE - $13,000

The chip is good for security but I fail to see how it has any prestige or how one earns a chip. My freedom expired in June and the new one they sent has no chip. But my citi simplicity and my thank you preferred have chips. None of these cards have any prestige that I know of. It seems this has more to do with the issuer that the customer's merit or prestige level. I can't recall anytime anyone saw my citi card with chip and a red impressed or what not. Outside cards with steep annual fees, like centurion. Or maybe Amex platinum, do credit cards have prestige?

I'm not seriously against asking for cards with chips. I will ask for them in the Amexes and Freedom.

It's more that I'm a little disappointed that no company has taken the approach of saying "chips will improve security for all our customers, not just the high spending, big limit, AF-paying ones, so let's make sure all of the cards we have out there get chips ASAP". The fact that Amex will overnight cards for free, and Discover will let me change the card design as often as I like, sending new ones fairly quickly, just seems like misplaced priorities relative to improving security (at least for Discover).

I agree with you completely on this. Although I just received my replacement Freedom Visa for Freedom Mastercard swap from Chase, and the new card has a chip on it, my other existing major cards have not been replaced with EMV cards as yet. Supposedly, the cutoff date of October 2015 will signify when all merchants will be required to have card readers to read the chips, as well as the magnetic stripes. Here's a hypothetical (for now) question: what happens if many merchants have a "chip only" reader, and your old stripe card is no good there? Shouldn't the banks make sure you get the latest technology NOW, ASAP, as opposed to waiting until the last minute? Let's not forget, the rest of the world has had this "new" technology for years now!

An update:

Amex and Chase: Fast service, and they will send chip cards via USPS.

Barclays: Only the Arrival series can get chips right now.

Discover: No chip cards are available at present.

Technically, in terms of the various dates the cards are printed, my newest account (Sallie Mae) will soon be my oldest physical card. Discover has a non-EMV design change and the other three will have chips.
