Card Cosmetics - The Pretty, the Ugly, and the Awkward

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Sun Aug 31, 2014 5:24 pm

Completely ignoring the AFs, rewards, service, and overall value of credit cards, what do people think are the ones with the nicest designs on them? The ugliest? Or not necessarily ugly but a bit weird or awkward to carry around? You don't necessarily have to have the card.

From the designs I've seen:
Pretty - Arrival and Arrival+, Amex charge cards, the red daisy Discover
Ugly - Sallie Mae Rewards, Amex Blue line (a little), Amex Delta line
Weird/awkward: Priceline Shatner, Barclays NFL (some), Victoria's Secret, Discover mix tape
Wallet: Prestige CSP SchwabPlat Freedom It Hyatt SallieMae AAPlat
SD: Arrival BrooksBros BCE ED IHG
Letting new accounts cool off since May
Really not sure what I'll add next or when

Agree with you on the pretty and ugly ones. The Shatner card is really creepy- I've seen the priceline cards without them, though so I think you can ask for one without him. William Shatner does have a really good rug, I must admit!

My Discover It mixtape card is actually one of my favorites aesthetically pleasing standpoint. It's a clever, unique design for a card. And get's more comments than my metal CSP. Some other thoughts:

  • Chase- Overall, I think they overall have the best looking cards, but I like blue anyway. Their Disney Premier card is really sharp!
  • Barclay- They make some of the best and worst looking cards. I like the Arrival cards and their two "ribbon" cards patterned after the UK Barclaycards. The Hawaiin Airlines cards are some of the most beautiful cards you can find, Other than that... Barclay has an ugly lineup of cards.
  • Wells Fargo has probably the ugliest cards (with the exception noted below).
  • Bank of America has a generally unspectacular lineup with a few exceptions. I like the pink ribbon card- beautiful card and cause. The Alaska Airlines and Virgin Atlantic cards are nice, too.
  • Subprime cards- I mentioned this card in a post last week... The Matrix Discover card was a nice looking card. First Premier has the ugliest cards ever, although they once had a card called the Aventium card which was a nice looking black card- although the 79.9% APR was kind of a drawback(the APR is not a typo!)
  • The best looking card ever? I'm kind of biased but my Wells Fargo debit card with my beagle/german shepherd mix is a nice card. Here's the picture on the card:

In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]
  • Discover It $2750[8-13]
  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450

I can see how it would be nice to see your dog in what doubles as a wallet photo, and the photo itself is cute.

Chase is pretty consistent about avoiding ugly designs. The Disney is good. I guess generic shades of blue aren't bad, they're just not terribly interesting.

First Premier cards are ugly.

The Hawaiian Airlines cards are very nice. BofH and Barclaycard have the same designs:https://www.hawaiianbohcard.com/servicing/

L.L. Bean and Williams-Sonoma have a nice look. I didn't really realize how big Barclaycard was as far as the number of travel and retail-branded cards they offered!

Good looking:

AmEx Platinum - the letters and numbers are black instead of silver and it looks great with the grey. Its also very iconic.
AmEx Everyday - clear and silver.
Arrival Plus - matte with the shiny ribbon.
Discover IT Chrome - cassette tape and wrote my name on the "label".
CSP - Metal with a funky blue pattern.

Ugly:

BoA Cash Rewards - Very basic with a BoA pattern.
Sallie Mae - Horribly bland.
FICO TU - 728 - 8/14
FICO EX - 716 - 7/14
FICO EQ - 740 - 7/14

Bank of America Cash Rewards - $2,400
Best Buy - $3,000
American Express Blue Cash Everyday - $8,000
American Express Everyday - $10,000
Discover It Chrome - $500 (AU on fiancée's card, helping her build credit)
American Express Platinum - NPSL
Barclaycard Arrival+ - $3,000
Capital One Yamacard - $11,000

I was unsure of what to put on my mix tape discover until someone here (Obi-dan I believe) suggested "Chicks Dig It Vol. 1". That was kind of the finishing touch to the card and those old enough to remember the mixed tape days usually laugh when they see it (especially girls).

I haven't seen the everyday card, but it looks good on the website. Of course, the BCE looked good until I actually got the card.

I might have to try the mixtape. I'm still on boring default blue but had planned to switch to the daisy before long.

I think they now deactivate the old card, though, so you can't have multiple cards working at once.

As another Barclaycard extreme, Best Western is pretty ugly. So is Ring.

I think the plainest looking card I have right now is the Wells Fargo Plat. There's not really much to the design that you wouldn't find on their debit cards. And I completely agree with the EveryDay card being good looking. It surprised me the first time when I saw how clear and see through it was.
Macy's TLs (21k), Lowes (17k), CSP (10k), Sam's Club (10k), Nordstrom (5k), AARP (4.2k), Freedom (3k), Discover (1.5k), Quicksilver (2k), BoA (3k), Barclaycard Arrival (2.5k), Amazon Store (6k), Paypal (4.9k), Sam's Club MC (3.6k), Walmart MC (1.2k)

Snapped a pic for you. Not the best, but it looks closer to the real thing than the website. I think it would look a lot better if they didn't put the white snowflake looking things all over the top half.

BCE would be better without it, too. Without the snowflake look, BCE could be a nice-looking card.

Maybe if they extended the colorful square out to the sides of the card...or put a blue band on to make the number more visible. The numbers are so much clearer on the blue background than on the snowy white/clear.
