First credit card

Postby Osai789 » Sat Aug 23, 2014 10:24 pm

I just turned 18 last week and will be going to college next month as a freshman. I would like the capital one journey card. Will having a capital one 360 saving and checking raise my chances of approval. I currently have a part time job in which I earn 25k before taxes. Any other advice will be appreciated.

I wish I had started a credit history when I was 18, instead of waiting until after college!

Since they know you don't have a credit history, I would look at the Discover It for Students card. Not 100% of places take Discover, I know, but most places do and the customer service is a lot better than Capital One's. You can always use a Visa or MC debit card when a place doesn't accept it.

I don't think it matters for CapOne. As long as you can provide proof of income, you'll get the card pretty much. I'd also try going for a student card with Discover first. It would be a great way to start building your credit with one of the prime lenders. My first credit card was with Citi so maybe you could also look at that as an option.

You can also consider the Discover Chrome for students, which has an bonus cash back on gas and restaurants (a base 1% plus a bonus 1% = 2% for $1,000 combined spending on gas and restaurants each quarter).

If you end up going with Discover and want a $50 bonus if you make a purchase in the first three months (on either Chrome or It), I would be happy to send you a link. I would get $50 if you were approved.

There is a $75 Amazon credit for the regular Discover It but I'm not sure if it also applies for the student version. Occasionally other offers are floating around the internet.

You could look at citi bank they have a few nice college cards. US Bank, Wells Fargo also have college visa. Discover would be the one to grab.

I agree with the others. Go with Discover and avoid Capitol One.

Holy **** you people make my head hurt.

This form is to hating Capital One as Myfico is to Gardening.

Has anyone in this thread that said Capital One sucks even had a Capital One card?

I haven't, but the CFPB publishes consumer complaint statistics. I've posted a link on here before and will try to hunt it down sometime today. CO, BofA, and Citi are far worse than Amex, Chase, Discover, and US Bank. GECRB/Synchrony, Barclays, and a few other major issuers were not mentioned.

To be honest, I have yet to have a major issue with them yet and didn't have to start out with one of their AF rebuilder cards either. I mean I know the customer service isn't top notch like with Chase and Amex IMO but they've been decent enough to me over the past couple of months and doesn't take too long for a payment to post onto my account either.
