Bank of America Lied to Me

Postby onion » Fri Aug 22, 2014 6:50 am

I opened a BoA secured card almost a year ago. In early 2014, I felt as if the $500 wasn't a high enough limit since I was putting all my spend through the card. I called up and spoke to customer service. They told me that I could request a CLI and since I had a secured card, it wouldn't pull my report and would just send me the form where it gives the option to add money to a secured card to bump the limit. Well, I checked out my credit report today and there's two hard pulls on TransUnion from them.

Can I dispute these? Or am I stuck with to inquiries that shouldn't be there?

Wow that's very cheap of them to do. I'm honestly not sure what I'd do here but since you said that they told you that they weren't going to pull anything, I'd at least try to dispute those inquiries and see what happens. I seriously would hope that they aren't like this with their regular cards because if that's the case, then I don't think I want anything to do with them.

The same thing happened to me back in March. My initial card was just 300 which I felt is very tiny and I asked for an increase. They just told me that I would have to pay whatever security amount I want and my card will be bumped with that limit. They didnt mention anything about any inquiry and it was my bad too to enquire about it. I thought it was my fault as I didnt ask about the enquiries but it seems like it is not the case. This might be the policy of their secured card.

NEVER believe what a CSR tells you in regards to hard pulls always assume it's going to be a hard.

I would insist that they pull the recording of the call and verify what you were told and remove the pull.

Failing that I would dispute with the credit bureau AND report it to the CFPB.

Really a poor business practice to do this to people.

I went through the same experience, that a CSR told there won't be any HP and there was one. It was for Citi Thankyou Preferred card.
I disputed the HP. I called the citi executive office and talked with a manager. She pulled up my conversation, and verified that the CSR actually told me there won't be any HP.
After verification, my HP was removed from my credit report.
The whole process took around 3 weeks, and I had to send a couple of fax to the head office as well. In the end the HP was gone though.

I just called. They conveniently can't access the phone recordings. Such BS. I'll just call TU up.

I`m with Member always assume an inquiry is waiting to happen.

Last year I asked for a CLI online for my BOA card- I was told to wait for a letter on the mail -week passed- When I received the letter on the mail it was telling me that I was "not old enough" to ask for a credit increase(I was 21 already). so I decided to pay my local BOA a visit and asked to have my limit increased there. So the guy who helped me out called the headquarters (my guess) and he helped me out. I was given an increase from $600 to $2. Wish i would had drop the card instead and gone for another good sign up card from Citi or something. feels like a waste of an inquiry since I don't use the card..

I have found that the best way to prevent an unauthorized hard pull is to have all three CRA's frozen until an authorized pull is needed. I realize that this will not help with your current situation, but it will prevent it from happening again.

Before I understood the process of pulls, one time I went to my local 5/3 branch to close my card and the rep suggested another 5/3 card they had. So I told him to change my old card to the cash rewards which I have now. Come to find out, it was a hard pull and it was a new app.

Another instance, I remember I was talking to a boa rep and I wanted to product change my card and for some reason he was trying to get me to apply for the credit card. Learning from my previous experience with 5/3, I kept on saying over the phone I am not consenting with the process of a new app and I do not want a hard pull. He was pretty persistent and I gave him the same response over and over. I called again and I got a better rep that gave me what I wanted.

I was in the same situation as you were with 5/3. It was my first credit card and I didn't know that much about credit yet, other than the basics (util, etc).

Needless to say, its this kind of crap from BoA that caused me to close my two checking and savings account there.
