When I'm going across the Atlantic I'm almost never flying a US airline. European airlines usually add a few hundred in fuel surcharges to award tickets. The airline I fly the most is KLM and occasionally Turkish Airlines. I think KLM stands for "fuel surcharge" because they add a few hundred to award tickets. But again, the BIGGEST issue is seat availability. I'd rather pay for a ticket and get there when I want/need to, than get a free flight and have some jacked up schedule that is less than ideal. (I'll never forget the time I had a 23 hour layover going to my destination, plus had to return home a day earlier than desired due to award availability. That's when miles started to really seem icky to me, and that was on Delta.)
