@onion,

I think the concierge did a pretty good job with the carrot cupcake research. Finding out that some cupcakes are only available certain days shows Emily probably made at least a few phone calls.

I live in Denver and you can buy marijuana with a credit card, not an American Express of course. One dispensary shows up as "Gardening Supplies" on the charge.

The smart ones (some of my clients) run merchant accounts through a separate entity. There are ways around it.

The other payment networks don't investigate the merchant's business too closely, so long as there aren't customer complaints? Or it's just Amex's policy not to deal with merchants where there is a conflict between state and federal laws?
