Visa Black Card?

Postby Callmedory » Mon Jul 07, 2014 1:51 pm

So, again, I'm getting an offer for this card. Paperwork says it's from Barclays.

Any info? I have a CSP, so I don't need another card with an annual fee, but are there unique benefits to the Black Card?

Oh there sure are - you get to pay 495 for a card that's mediocre just so you can have a "black" card. A 1.95 can of spray paint on a Cap One card would give you about the same thing at a whole lot cheaper price.

450 is for Amex Platinum which is actually cheaper than the Barclays card and actually offers some perks. Visa Black is 495 a year.

I'd pass them by. I honestly do not see the value of it.

I believe the only major difference is that you get more personalized "concierge" services when you need to travel, or buy something. Many people got this "invitation" (I did too). But remember: this "Black Card" is NOT an actual "upper tier Visa Card" (like the "Signature" tier): this is a special card offered by Barclays Bank privately. I checked this out with the Visa people already. For $495.00, I can make my own purchases of fancy items, and have a travel agent make the same arrangements for my trip (possibly with even better airline, hotel and car rental rates), thank you.

I was riding the train a few weeks ago and heard a woman talking with her grandson. Conversation turned toward credit cards, so I eavesdropped. He was talking about how his dad had the AmEx black card, and the woman goes, "Oh, I have a black card too from Merrill Lynch. And it's $295 a year. So I'm getting the same thing for way less!" Grandson says something about how it's not the same card, and she goes, "Well it's a black card, and those are the best you can get!"

I mean we could go back and forth about whether the Centurion is "worth it" or whatever. Not sure what Merrill Lynch's black card (guess it's the Accolades?) offers ... seems like it's meant for people who have a ton of money invested with them. But it just made me laugh at how people get so fixated on the color and think they're getting something superextraspecial because the card is black.
Cards:

-Capital One Quicksilver
-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)
-IHG
