July 2014 Garden Cult meeting - join us and drink the free Kool-Aid!

Postby MemberSince99 » Thu Jul 03, 2014 6:34 am

We haven't had our Garden Cult meeting for a couple of months. We are such terrible heathens and sinners for that, we are surely going right to hell.

I've stayed in the Garden I have not had a single inquiry since mortgage pre-approval in May. Prior to that the last credit card I got was in March.

Presently if I think a mortgage is likely, and I'm really having deep second thoughts on the whole thing though I know renting is a fool's game, then I can't app for anything but there isn't anything I am even remotely interested in other than POSSIBLY the Amex HHonors card as I stayed in the Hilton for my last trip (just got back yesterday and will have to go back again soon I'm sure) and I could see using that. But that is it. I'm going to look into the card but not sure.

Otherwise that's all she wrote!

Hello MemberSince99.

Is the Kool Aid sugar free? I'm supposed to be on a diet.

I have been in the Garden for a whole 2 and a half weeks! Maintaining credit cards is not nearly as fun as applying for them. Whenever I need a reminder why I shouldn't apply for more credit cards, I go to the myfico forum. Half of the members are obsessed with gardening and the other half are having mental breakdowns over their terrible financial choices.
My Cards:

Discover It - $8,450 (9/13)
BankAmericard Cash Rewards Visa Signature - $5,000 (4/14)
Chase Freedom - $3,000 (5/14)
AMEX Hilton HHonors - $16,500 (6/14)

Well I hate to break it to you, but the kind of Kool Aid I'm talking about, let's just say that any sugar won't be a problem for very long so don't worry about it.

I still wonder, and have no idea so if anyone knows please fill me in, that if they are so obsessed with gardening, how the hell did they get 30 cards in their signatures? Last week I was on there and counted 35 cards in one guy's signature. Today I saw one with 20. Those are not at all unusual. I'd just like to know, did they just find those cards laying around somewhere, or what, because if they really don't believe in applying for new credit unless you really "need" it, well who "needs" 35 credit cards?

I'm thinking of buying a house in a year or two. I'm not doing any more apps until after all mortgage things.

Hi, everyone. My name is djrez4. I've been app-free for 93 days.

Now that we have that out of the way: I can imagine having a large number of accounts. I have 19 open right now and have closed 8 others in the past 18 months. But, I don't feel the need to list every single one of them in my signature. What would motivate someone to do that? To be honest, I'm not even sure why I list any cards in my signature. Do you people really give a flying f*ck what cards I have? Maybe I should list my points balances instead. At least that's an objective way to measure something (not sure what).

On the other hand, we all do things that appear completely senseless to others. Some people think your righteous indignity at credit card companies is pretty odd, Member. (I also happen to giggle every time I call you Member, but that's because I'm immature.) Some people don't understand the MSing that I and others do. I'm sure there are plenty of other quirks I have that my friends are nice enough not to bring up. Heck, maybe I'd like to know about some of them and work on them.

I would like to know what cards you have, sure.

Not sure when I am indignant at them, except when companies like Discover give you a toy limit and tell you they are a "conservative lender". I mean do they really think they are going to get a lot of spend then? Maybe with some but that just makes me a "conservative spender". After all that's a good thing according to them.

Yeah member is funny now that I think about it. Did you know discussing MS is against the terms of FICO? If you are a mod's pet there, flaming the hell out of anyone you think is an idiot is ok though. Oh well.

I guess it depends on the person. You might be able to handle 19, but I couldn't manage another card unless my spending habits (and income) change. I might even cancel one of them because 3 was a much more manageable number for me.

Well this must be one of those labyrinth gardens because I've been trapped in here for two years. It's been that long since I've gotten a credit card and I don't know what I want at this point.

P.S. I hate Kool-Aid lol.
Wells Fargo Platinum 2.100 (5/2011-cld 7/12/14)
AmEx Platinum (6/12)
Barclays Apple (6/12)
AMEX Gold Delta (5/13)
Marriott Rewards (7/14)

My credit score
EQ: unknown
EX: 762
TU: 752

I want the Amex Hilton, but I simply can't risk applying for it until I either decide this isn't the time to buy a home, or I've gotten into my new home, whichever comes first.

To be honest, that's the ONLY reason I have not applied for it. I could use it, and it would only increase my AAoA. I just do not dare to provoke the wrath of the underwriters if there is a chance I'm going to buy this year. If it wasn't for that I'd have already done it. But now I'll see what's out there and consider what to do. When that's done I'll revisit the card and likely go for it.
