Credit History Entry

Postby stranger » Wed Jun 18, 2014 8:39 am

Hi there,

I have a limited credit history and I'm trying to build it up. A few months ago I got a card through Amazon, and I've been using it (responsibly) since then. The trouble is the card was issued to the name on my Amazon account, which is not my legal name.

How will this affect my ability to apply for future cards? Is the credit history I've established with that card tied to my name, or to my social security number, or both?

Also, can I change the name on the card? Will the credit history I've established with the card thus far remain valid if I do so?

Thanks

Pull your reports and verify. Why didn't you contact the creditor to get the name corrected?

I didn't think anything of it at first, because I assumed it was all tied back to my SSN. But then I just went to "Check if I was prequalified" on the creditor's website, and there were no prequalified offers under my legal name, but there were offers under the name that the card is in. That's what made me realize it wasn't all (necessarily) tied together behind the scenes.

UPDATE: I spoke to the creditor, and they said that changing the name on the card would have no effect on my credit score/report.

It won't have any effect.

Credit reports include aliases, nicknames, etc. All of your names are included and associated with your social security number. If you have only applied for one card in your life, only the Amazon account name will be associated. If you apply for another card with your full name, it will then attach that name to your account.

Did you know that last I read, you could book your flight through the UR mall and pay with your Platinum and get rewards from Chase AND Amex on the same purchase?

I did know that. Now, if you were super cool, you'd buy airline gift certs through the UR mall with the Plat, get reimbursed via the airline credit, then go back through the UR mall and buy your tickets with the gift certs. Then you get two times the UR point, MR points, and save $200.

But why are we talking about that here?
