Making more than one credit card payment a month: Is this true?

Postby kcm7 » Mon Jun 16, 2014 1:05 pm

I have a Barclaycard card and make a payment every week to keep my utilization low. At the end of the cycle, a very small balance reports, and I go in that same day and pay it off in full. I was hoping I'd be able to set up autopay to eliminate this last step (thus, I'd make a weekly payment to keep utilization down and then let the machines pay off whatever's left on my statement when my billing cycle ends).

But I called Barclaycard, and it turns out you can't do that. Or at least the rep says I can't do that. They told me that, if I have autopay set up to "pay in full," the amount that gets paid will be equal to all the charges I made in the billing cycle, whether I already made some payments over the course of the cycle. Because I will have then, essentially, overpaid, it will result in a credit on my account. I don't really want any extra money coming out of my checking account, so that would be super annoying.

This also doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't autopay just read the amount I have left to pay off (ie, my "statement balance,") on the day my statement cuts and withdraw that amount from my checking? I'm thinking the rep didn't understand what I was asking (even though we went back-and-forth for several minutes, and he seemed pretty confident and enthusiastic and said that "everyone who likes to pay more than once a month has this issue").

Anyway, just wanted to see if there any other multiple-payments-per-month folks out there and what their experiences were (and how their card handles autopay in this situation).

Thanks!
Cards:

-Capital One Quicksilver
-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)
-IHG

I made multiple payments per month on my Arrival card and never had an issue. I suspect it's yet another clueless Barclay's rep training to some day reach the level of a Cap One rep. Some of them have a LONG way to climb to even reach that level of general cluelessness.

haha OK that's good to know! Thanks!

I logged back in to set up auto-pay, and have been foiled yet again. Because I just made a payment in full (my statement cut on Fri), I can't set up autopay right now. Apparently I can't do so until my new statement balance hits next month.

I called, and the rep explained that, since I've already paid this statement off, the system is confused because the payment isn't due til July 9th. So, the way it sees things, there's no auto-payment to be made, hence the error message. So, on July 12th, when my next statement cuts, I will just have to remember to log in and set up autopay BEFORE paying off my balance. This will appease the gods.

A headache to be sure, but I'm glad that, once I do get things set up, all should be hunky-dory.

Set your payments to "push" from your bank/credit union, rather than "pull" from Barclay. Problem solved.

All depends on how Barclay's system is set up. You can't just assume that all creditors have systems that make sense to you. There's potentially a lot out there that doesn't make sense depending one one's expectations.

Neither reply seems to be addressing what the OP is asking. It's not just a matter of whether the OP can make multiple payments. The OP is reducing utilization with payments and then wants the remaining balance automatically paid every month. Setting up scheduled push payments won't help unless the OP's charges are the same every month.
