Second Credit Card

Postby thisischuck01 » Sat Jun 07, 2014 8:48 pm

Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a second credit card, to have another line of credit and hopefully increase my credit score a bit more.

Back in December (almost 7 months ago) I applied for and was approved for a Capital One QuicksilverOne. I was originally approved for a $300 CL, but as of last month that was increased to $1800. All my payments have been on time, and I have a credit utilization of 5% (I immediately pay off most purchases). According to Capital One's Credit Tracker, I currently have a credit score of 756.

Last week, I applied for a Chase Freedom card. I received a letter yesterday, telling me that I had been denied for a lack of credit history and too few lines of credit. Obviously I can't do much besides wait to increase my credit history, but I feel as though it might not be a bad idea to open another line of credit.

I use Simple as my bank, so I can't get a credit card that way. And I'm a little lost trying to find a good second credit card. Any suggestions?

What rewards/benefits do you want from the second card?

If you are interested in the Chase Freedom, I would apply for the Discover It. It has nearly identical rotating categories. From what I have seen on different posts, they also seem to approve and give decent credit limits to fairly recent credit card users.
My Cards:

Discover It - $8,450 (9/13)
BankAmericard Cash Rewards Visa Signature - $5,000 (4/14)
Chase Freedom - $3,000 (5/14)
AMEX Hilton HHonors - $16,500 (6/14)

I'm essentially looking for something that improves upon the perks of the provides of the QuickSilverOne. More cash-back, no annual fee, etc. A credit score tracker would be great, too. It looks like the Discover It fits the bill perfectly, thanks!

Did you call and try to recon the decline? I got declined when I app'd for the Freedom as well, but I called the recon number and I got the card with a 500 limit.
March 2011- Wellsfargo Cash Back College Card
May 2012- Chase Freedom
May 2012- Discover IT
August 2012- American Express Blue Cash Everyday

I did. They looked into it for me, but unfortunately they ended up saying the same thing that the letter did.

Which number did you use for reconsideration?

For myself my 2nd card was AMEX Blue Cash Everyday, but that was because of a mailed offer. I didn't apply for any credit before this.

Also if you want credit score tracker I would recommend Disvocer it, it provides TransUnion FICO. It pulled TransUnion when I applied for the card, but I have seen it pulled Equifax for some other people.
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015
All EMV.

I used 888-245-0625.

I actually applied for the Discover It earlier this morning, and was immediately approved! I wasn't told what my CL was, but I'll just wait and see.

Thanks for all of the responses, everyone! :)
