Gasoline Cards

Postby Michael » Tue Jun 03, 2014 9:47 am

I have two gasoline cards (Mobil and Shell) which basically do not offer any rewards.

Is it worth putting $10 on each every three or four months, just to keep them active?

Some stations give cents off for using their own cards, but not here in Illinois.

I was just thinking that none of us know what the credit card future holds . .

P.S. I do have several reward bank cards which are used several times a year.

Thanks.

I still maintain four gasoline cards from major oil companies. There is not only no rewards offered (except for BP, which lets you pile up a certain number of monthly "points" which you can cash in for gas discounts of a penny or two per gallon), but here in Florida, there are periods when cash payers get a lower price than those with the company credit card. I keep these cards as an "idiosyncrasy". Why? Because many years ago (the 1970's), gas shortages would hit all over the country, and stations were cutting down on people's purchases by ONLY selling gas to people with company credit cards (which they stopped issuing anyway when the shortage hit). This is of course, not a factor anymore (?), so I wouldn't worry about gas cards that you don't use often.

As stated above, your call. Worth is always highly subjective. I didn't see any worth in keeping my Shell card with other cards that offered better rewards, terms and limits but YMMV.

While that's true if that's the sole justification then you'll never close any cards (also your call though).
