Heard that Discover was checking up on students
I heard a story last night from someone who has always been believeable that Discover is now contacting students, particularly those who are graduating or completing school and asking where they work and how much they make. The telephone reps are saying it is for future marketing and possibly credit line changes down the road with nothing being offered to the customer (CLI only should take seconds) for providing the info. Discover not offering anything left the person I spoke to, with a bit of a "huh?", so what's in it for me to give this to you.
I wonder how their student portfolio is performing and if this foreshadows anything for the individual or that portfolio segment

This is true. I received a solicitation in the mail a couple weeks ago that gave me a reference number and a number to call. It touted how the information was going to be used to possibly give me a credit line increase because I'm graduating. I doubled my credit limit when I phoned in for a CLI about a week before I received the solicitation in the mail. When I called, the representative asked what my occupation would be and how much I would be making, but no CLI just a "thanks-for-being-our-customer".

Discover keeps getting sillier
So I heard back from the person who told me that Discover had contacted them about getting updated info given their college graduation. They gave the info that Discover requested and nothing happened except they received a verbal thank you. So they waited a few days and applied for a credit line increase, providing the same info given about graduation. The individual was turned down. No big surprise for a student who just graduated and is new into a new job. Then within three more days a sizeable credit line increase appears in the account online with no communication (at least as of yet) to the individual.
It's like hearing Big Ben strike 13 rings at noon. The clock may keep time but its broken; and if broken then ---unreliable---.
The person is happy with the CLI but believes it will be taken away given the initial turndown, so its not likely to be used ( it was supposively a real turndown too and not that the matter is under review).
A strange way to do business.
