Just to be fair

Postby MemberSince99 » Wed May 21, 2014 8:43 pm

I didn't want to complain about Discover without giving them every chance.

They say you are eligible for a CLI after 90 days. Frankly I doubted it, but I thought, let me give them every shot at it. I got the card in early February (3rd I think) and have had 3 full statements it's clearly been 90 days. In that 90 days Discover has gotten the heaviest spending of any of my cards, and been paid in full (which they may not like, but I don't care, I'm not carrying a balance).

So, I called the number, went to where the CLI option is if you have it, and I do not have it. So I went online to the "Request Credit Line Increase" option and clicked that. It told me I am not eligible for one at this time. Gee thanks Cap One, how about throwing in something like "Discover as you know is a conservative lender". (Yeah no ****, we'd be dumber than a box of rocks not to have figured that out).

Given that I've given them a truly fair shot to follow through, that gives me the right to say - forget any significant spend except on the 5% categories I'm interested in Discover. You have no annual fee, so it doesn't really pay to close you out, but you can be 100% sure the only spending you are getting is the 5% from here on. And if you close me for inactivity in the meantime, I honestly couldn't care less.

That's just how it stands. I gave them a truly fair shot here now I have the right to let it be known I'm less than pleased, and to shift my spend to lenders who actually seem to care if I give them business. Enough said, point made, but that's how it is.

Is that actually going to make any difference?

I've called them plenty of times before, and always talked to a friendly American which is great compared to some companies, but honestly that never meant they could do anything for me beyond what the rules allowed. It's not like Chase recon where with the right person they can decide to give you a shot, from what I have seen but maybe I'm missing something?

+1.

Could be that you've calculated your eligibility date incorrectly. Talk to them and ask when you're eligible.

Possibly. I couldn't request a CLI using the methods you mentioned. Requested one via a customer service request on their site and received the CLI.

That's good to know, thank you for sharing that. I will call them by tonight, and find out what's up. I mean if they could even bump it to an even 5k, a 500 increase without a hard pull it would mean something. I can't take a hard pull right now for any reason or I'd likely let them do it if need be. Anyway I will try.

I have had Discover since 2010, with very little auto CLI. In these years, I have used Discover a lot and always paid in full.
Recently I started using my Freedom a lot, with little to no spending on Discover, and guess what, Discover increased my limit to 6.8K seeing activity on its competitors card.

Gold Delta AMEX | Citi DoubleCash | Citi Simplicity
Chase Freedom | Kohls Charge Card

I called them up over lunch spoke with a nice guy. I asked what I can do to make the card eligible for a CLI. He asked what I was looking for as far as increase, income, why did I want one etc. I told him that I had just gotten mortgage pre-approval and under no circumstances can I take a hard pull right now. He checked and I am not eligible for an increase without a hard pull, so that was that. (And I'm guessing they would have declined me had I allowed it).

So, I have truly given them every chance and plenty of spend and no dice. They are a business and entitled to make their choices, but then so am I, and I can tell you going forward, they will only see real spend in the 5% categories. I may as well switch the majority of my spend to lenders who have my back, or at least show they want the business.

Likewise; my one CLI from Discover came after nine months of inactivity--about 11 months after I opened the account. I was bumped from $8k to $9.5k.

I always carry my Discover card but only use it for 5% categories and at Sam's. Now that my Hawaiian Airlines card is a MC I will proly use it at Sam's...
American Express (2005): Premier Rewards Gold & Blue Cash Preferred
Chase: Freedom & UA Club USAA: Signature Visa & American Express
Discover it Bank of Hawaii Hawaiian Airlines WEMC Synchrony Sam's MC
Navy FCU Platinum Visa Citi Double Cash & AT&T Access MC
