Discover Perks

Postby Vattené » Thu Feb 27, 2014 7:16 pm

As a new Discover member, I'm curious about others' experiences with the card's benefits.

No specific question; I'd just like to hear what others think broadly. Has anyone used Discover for auto rental insurance, Roadside Dispatch, the price protection program, or any other perk? If so, were you pleased with the service or do you have a war story to share?

I've used the price protection with great success. There was an earlier thread about how long the process can take so don't rely on it to pay your bill.

Also ShopDiscover is really good. They give great cash back bonuses that stack up. I recently had to get a new fridge and bought it from Home Depot through ShopDiscover and got 5% from ShopDiscover, 5% from the Home Improvement cash back program, and 1% on top of that. The cash back bonuses do stack up.

Their customer support is usually very nice too.

Same new member, haven't heard of any of those perks you mentioned (thanks for your info BTW). However, there would be chance I use ShopDiscover, which is partially why I apply for the card.

I would recommend spending some time in their ShopDiscover portal and find something you need. For those select merchants you can get at least 5% cashback bonus, but also possible for 10%/15%/20%.
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015
All EMV.

I have used ShopDiscover quite a bit since I've gotten my card as well. I love it and use it every chance I get. I have also been extremely pleased with their customer service.

I only heard about the perks myself from their website, but really have no idea how they work or how valuable they are. I bet they are worth checking out if you need it, but so far I haven't really had the need for much of them.

I bought furniture last quarter and wasn't expecting the 5% cashback to apply (I figured they would classify "home improvement" as narrowly as possible to avoid paying out more) but I was quite surprised to find out the furniture store I went to did. That was an unexpected good quarter for me. I have just been thrilled with my entire Discover experience since getting the card.

Add me to the "haven't used much" set. I have used ShopDiscover, but just once, I think. I bought Bose noise cancelling head phones which they put the monthly payment on my Escape card. No brainer. Mine is a travel card, so most of the benefits are travel related, i.e. bag delay, trip cancellation, rental car loss damage waiver, etc. so if I have to use most of the benefits, they keep me from being stuck paying out of pocket for delayed bags or hotel use due to cancellation. No experience there...yet.

I do like My Concierge. Just call and they make travel arrangements, restaurant reservations, suggest gifts, etc. I have a concierge with two (three?) of my Chase cards now, so I revolve between them.
Cards and Credit lines Acquired:

Escape by Discover (7.75K), Barclay Holland America Visa (7K), Macy's store card (7K), Bloomingdale's store card (2.6K), Citi Custom Credit Line (3.5K), PayPal Smart Connect credit line (2.7K), Chase Freedom Visa (5K), Chase United MileagePlus Visa (5K), Chase Sapphire Preferred Visa (6K), Amazon store card (2.2K), Lord & Taylor store card (550), Nordstrom store card (1500), Gold Delta SkyMiles from American Express (3K), Discover It (6.5K), PayPal Credit Line (1K).
