Cashback Checking Nightmare

Postby darkguy2 » Tue Jan 21, 2014 11:26 pm

Well you guys might remember me saying that I was signing up for Discover's Cashback Checking account a few months ago at the beginning of December. This is mostly a update on my experience so far.

After about 2-3 weeks and still not getting either my PIN or debit card I called in to ask about it. They said it was sent out and I should have gotten it already so they canceled the card and sent out a new one. Well a week later I get the card right before I went home for the holidays. Happily I drove 3 hours home and the next day I tried to activate the card. I talked to the rep and they had no idea what I was talking about when I said I wanted to activate my debit card and tried to transfer me to Discover IT. I told them that no it was for my checking account so they look into it and it turns out that the card I had was the one that was canceled and not the new one they sent. They told me that they cannot reactivate the card and I would have to wait for the new one. Also of note is that I still did not get my PIN number which is mailed separately. I am annoyed but soon forget about it as it is the holidays.

Fast forward to the end of last week and I get my PIN in the mail. It is coming up on two months and I still do not have my debit card and I am pretty sure that this PIN is for the old card. So I call again and talk to a rep that was understanding but could not figure out why it was happening. He said it could be because they are sending out new cards for the Target event but I said that I opened my account before that broke. So here it is over three weeks after I ordered my replacement card and still nothing. This is almost the opposite of my experience with my IT as they would have overnighted it to me. They tell me to wait till the end of the week to see if it comes so they don't cancel that one if I get it. If not then they said they will express me a new one. I do not see why they cannot just do that now so I can get it this week. Very disappointed.

Also when I signed up they had a $50 bonus for putting in $25. Well I find out that you get it 4-6 weeks after the expiration date for the deal. So since it ended at the end of the year I have to wait till February to get it. F me for signing up early right? Now I have to wait two and a half months to get my bonus. I will most likely just close the account after getting it after this experience. Their banking side is a far cry from their credit side.

how much cashback do they offer?

with Chase checking you get $200 if you deposit $100 but the only problem is not everyone gets it

back before $300 ones exist (cos there are $300 for checking now) and $200 wasn't common, I opened mine with $150 cashback

kind of wish I had waited for a $200 but who knew

still better then $50 though

might want to try Chase, they also have instant issue debit cards so no mailing it out

Discover checking offers 10 cents per purchase made with debit card, online bill pay, or check.

DarkGuy, when you call, with whom do you speak? Last night I was finally able to resolve a two week old dispute with Ally Bank over a trust account I was setting up. Each time we called we got confused reps. Last night it began happening again and I finally decided to pull the "I'm sorry, but can I please speak with your supervisor?" line. I wanted someone capable of putting all the pieces together and looking at the problem cohesively. Usually this is what supervisors are good for and in this case I was right.

How do you do the deposit? I was hesitate because they have no branch office to deposit by cash and I do not want my Chase or Wells Fargo charge me for wire transfer. I do not have a direct deposit at this point.

They do a deposit by pulling it with a e-check. So it is not a wire. I looked into chase but when I go on their site it tells me that it is not available in my area. I talked to a regular rep but they seemed to be able to help me so I did not feel the need to ask for someone higher. I got my card in the mail today so now I just have to wait for my bonus when I can close the account. I have BB&T for my checking and Ally for my savings. I only use my checking account to pay rent, direct deposit, and paying off my statements. Otherwise I just use my CCs for the cash back.

thanks sam

if you get the 200 offer in the mail I would open it, still worth 100x more then ten cents if you don't really use a debit card for purchases (under 1$ is best, for me that would be the 95 cent scone I get at peets)

you can do a check deposit or transfer funds in though account transfer, it's free and much like wire except process is a lot faster and there is no fee and it's limited to accounts sharing same social--because once it's opened you can transfer back and forth very easily unlike wires

But Chase and Discover is not the same social, isn't it? Saying I want to transfer $50 from my Chase Checking Account to Discover Checking Account, then is it an account transfer or wire transfer?

Thanks in advance for your help.
Also thanks to darkguy2 for answering my question about the deposit.

Hi,

Sorry by social I mean social security, I have a tendency to abbreviate some words and not others, quite annoying and I am trying to catch myself

Yes, it's an account transfer

Basically if you can prove that that discover acct has your name and/or social security number on it then you can do an account verification, usually by trial deposits (think paypal if you've used that service)

or by logging into that account giving over your username and password

I like trial deposits more

That opens up the line so you can transfer between accounts fee free

The only thing is if you have international accounts, because they're not on the same aba American bankers association, system, but swift, it will be wire transfer only.
