Discover is Discontinuing Secure Card Numbers

Postby darkguy2 » Tue Jan 07, 2014 6:03 pm

Got a email saying that they are getting rid of the online card numbers. After Feb 6 you cannot make new ones and after Mar 15 all of the current ones will stop working.
Discover IT - $5,700
Chase Freedom - $5,700
Costco Citi - $13,000
Sallie Mae - $4,000
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $6,000
Chase Sapphire Reserve - $19,500
Citi Double Cash - $6,500
Amex BCE - $13,000

FICOs: Discover (777), SallieMae (764), Amex (767), Citi (772)
FAKOs: CK- TU (760), EQ (760)

This is the same as Citi's virtual credit card numbers, right? Haven't tried it with Discover yet.

Wonder what would cause them to discontinue a service that provides protection, given the recent Target debacle???

That's un-nice. Why would they do that?

Because they think it costs more than it's worth to them.

Idiotic thinking if true. Probably a decision made by the sort of middle management dimwits who think it's a great thing to skimp on backing up the company's vital data because of the cost - until things crash and they lose it all and are royally screwed and find out how much THAT costs.

I'm not a manager, but sometimes I resemble it a lot myself!

DarkGuy,

Are you sure Discover is doing this across the board? I just checked my email and site messages and didn't receive this message.

How often did you use the service? Was it enough for them to consider it abuse?

All depends on the actual numbers.
