Discover CLI Success. Funny story

Postby hwturner » Mon Sep 09, 2013 11:02 am

So I don't have a discover card but my roommate does. I want one so I've read a lot about the card on these forums. He was going through his wallet last night and I saw the card and was pretty surprised he had one. I asked him if he liked it and he said he's got it 4 years ago and never used it and forgot he had it. He STILL had the sticker on it!

So I told him about the benefits and asked him what his limit was and he had no idea. So we called Discover and before they answered I told him to ask what his limit was. He did, the rep responded with "You're current limit is $2,500" and immediately the rep asked "I see you haven't used your card in a long time, is there any specific reason you haven't used it?" to which he replied "My limit just isn't high enough(wink wink)" and the rep asked him if he'd like to try for a limit increase. I told him to go for it and ask for 2x his limit to be conservative. He asked for 5k and the rep asked him a few questions about income/housing etc. They also asked if he needed the increase for anything specific or just more spending power. He said more spending power.

So after he answered all the questions the rep came back and said they could get him to 4.5k. Not bad for having NEVER used the card.

I thought it was really funny and actually got a bit of a rush out of helping him with everything i've learned here.

In case anyone is wondering his income is 30k. He has a financed car, no housing payment. Not much of a balance on anything. His profile is just kind of vanilla. Like I mentioned, he has never used the card. He was really happy when I told him about all of the rewards etc.

He also said he had the Delta Amex but he didn't know where it was and he's never used it either. He has had that one for a few years. The guy is clueless. I told him if he liked the rewards offered by Discover then he may want to do a product change on his Delta Amex to a BCE or something. He's has no need for the airlines miles or anything.

As I mentioned before, I don't have any of the cards mentioned. The only reason I know about them is because of this site. I feel like a shepherd in the field, guiding his flock.

BTW, can anyone tell me how to make a signature for my posts? Can't figure it out for the life of me.

He didn't care either way but they actually never specified. I guess he can check when his report updates(although he won't for the same reasons he didn't even know he had a card)

Probably not. They're supposed to actually use those words when they're doing one, and ask for explicit permission. (At least, that's what they tell me when I've asked.)

I doubt it was a HP as I've gotten a couple of large CLIs with Discover as well with a SP.

Great job, OP!
