So far, so good Discover...

Postby josean4786 » Fri Jul 26, 2013 5:04 am

I just applied on 7/24/13 for the Discover It card, and got approved for $5,500 credit limit. I was surprised when they gave me this amount to start my credit venture with them because I thought maybe I was going to get approved with $1,500 or $2,000 CL. Great start Discover.

One of the main reasons that I applied for this card was because of the "No Foreign Fees". I have an upcoming trip to Venezuela and now I will be able to enjoy this trip without having to think that anything that I put on my cards will have to pay a little bit extra.

Good luck tying to use the card much outside of the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and China! I don't know much about card acceptance in Venezuela, but when I went to the UK, France, and The Netherlands last year, hardly anywhere took Discover/Diners Club. Most everywhere took Master Card and Visa, and a good number of them (especially the bigger chains) took Amex also. I was there for a month, making purchases everyday at restaurants, grocery stores, and regular stores/shops and was able to use my Discover twice the whole time. Make sure you carry at least a Visa or Master Card with you also.
Wallet:
AMEX BCP: 9K (2012) (every day expenses, gas, groceries, department stores)
AMEX Zync: NPSL (2011) (large expenses)
AMEX Costco: 4k (2013) (Costco, gas, and restaurants)
Discover IT: 5K (2010)
PenFed Plat Rewards Visa: 3K (2012) (Gas, Target)
USAA Plat MC: 7K (2010) (everyday expenses, places that do not take Amex or Discover)
US Bank Cash+: 7K (2012)
Target REDCard 3k (2013)

Discover

I have had good success using my Discover internationally. It works wherever Diners and JCB work. Just tell them to run the card. If you see Japanese tourists, you can be sure that someplace around there uses JCB.

+1 ilikeme1. Take a Visa/MC for backup. You'll regret it if you don't. Call Discover to let them know of your travel plans. I did when I left the country last month and they told me to take another card as backup because they were new in those countries and not widely accepted yet. I wasn't able to use my Discover Card during my trip.

Amex BCP 21K
Amex SPG 5K
Barclaycard Arrival Plus WEMC 5K
Chase Sapphire Preferred 23.5K

I have to agree. The only place I've ever really seen the Discover or Diners Club logo here in the UK is Pizza Hut and McDonalds and a couple of small shops that use Streamline to process card payments (They are partnerd with Diners so all streamline merchants automatically accept it). In France or Spain, I've never seen a Diners Club logo other than at hotels or airlines.

If your travelling Internationally you really need a Visa or MC or Amex in Certain countries (Like the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan where Amex is widely accepted).

The only countries where Discover is any good abroad is China (Excluding Hong Kong), Japan and Canada in Niagra falls.
Amex UK Platinum Charge Card
Amex Blue Cash USA
Amex US Gold Corporate Card
World MasterCard Capital One UK (Free abroad + Cashback + Free Cash Withdrawals with no interest)
