Appeal of Discover

Postby Vandalized2 » Sun Jun 30, 2013 2:27 am

I have never been interested in Discover, and have heard horror stories of these cards and their customer service.

Would someone tell me what the benefits are of having a Discover card on my credit. Considering what I already have.
I just do not see how it would benefit me, let me know.

I get offers all the time to apply for the card as well, just shredded them and threw them away without a second thought.

ShopDiscover
100% U.S. Based Customer Service
Some of the quarterly 5% categories are really good, like gas and ALL online purchases (stacks up with ShopDiscover, too!)
AMEX BCE ($20,000), Citi Forward ($6,800), Discover IT ($5,250), BoA Travel Rewards ($1,800)

Discover is good for increasing AAoA. Shop Discover too, but UR mall is a formidable opponent because I value UR points a lot. Also you can only cash out your Discover cashback at $50 increments.

Main Card: Amex Platinum
For gas: Penfed Platinum Cash Rewards
For travel & dining: Chase Sapphire Preferred

Agree with all of the above. The one and only negative at all that I know of is they can be stingy with limits with people who are very qualified to get higher. Otherwise I have only good things to say about them.

If they ever loosen up a bit, I'll reapply with them. There is honestly a lot to like about them.

How can they increase your AAoA? Do they have backdating like AMEX? If so, I might try to get added as an AU on my great grandma's Discover from 1988 and get backdated.

I REALLY hope they do, but I've never heard of it.

I have Discover, Amex and Chase. I would rank Discover #1 in customer service, followed by Chase, then Amex. The few times I've called Amex, it hasn't been horrible, just not as as good as the other two.

It's a good cash back rewards card that goes head to head with the freedom.

The only reason I don't use it more is because Discover is my lowest limit. But, because they were the first cc company to extend credit to me, I'm a big fan.
AMEX PRG~1/14--backdated to 2012
AMEX BCE~6/13--backdated to 2012
Chase Freedom~5/13
Discover IT ~12/12

No, I just have it sit around and kept it open for a long time. The same way all non-Amex cards increases your AAoA. :D

+1

Customer service is awesome, probably only second to Chase right now.

True UR points are great and I love the flexibility. I try to maximize both though, and as much as I love UR points if Discover is offering 10% CB--that's hard to beat.

You can redeem CB for smaller denominations if you are using partner GCs or "pay with CB" ferature.

At the end of the day I only use my IT card for targeted purchases--ones where I can get 5% or higher CB.

Okay, I was thinking Discover is officially my favorite company ever. Looks like my oldest account will continue sitting at ~4 years. I really need to get in with AMEX and see about backdating with a family members card. I think my grandma has a clear that's from the mid 2000s. Happy birthday to me, I think :D
