Do they do a hard inquiry if you are already pre-approved?

Postby pac4toon » Wed Jun 05, 2013 11:23 pm

Hello, quick question.. I keep receiving these pre-approved mailing from Discover IT. I don't have Discover yet but was wondering if they still do a hard inquiry if you accept the pre-approved letter. I'll be willing to try IT if they will not do a hard inquiry.

Thank you.

Yes they do. From what I understand the "per-approved" e-mails and letters is from companies sharing information like bank to bank. Or a credit card monitoring company or the sorts. You still have to go through the same process though. But the advantage is now you know you have a much-much better chance of being approved because they already like you.

Rule of thumb: if you submit any sort of request for credit of any kind, including responding to a pre-screened offer, it's a hard pull. Notable exception to the rule is Amex. If you're already in with them, you apply for an additional account, and they decline you, it's a soft pull.
