Hard inquiry when I explicitly said NO??

Postby x.far1 » Sat Jun 01, 2013 1:18 pm

Hi.

I called Discover a few days ago to ask for a credit limit increase. I told them that I do not want a hard inquiry and I would like them to go ahead only if it will be a soft inquiry.

The CSR told me that she will submit the application which will be a soft inquiry, and if the system doesn't allow an increase, then I will have the option to go for a hard inquiry.. for which I would have to give consent first.

I was not approved for a CLI, and I said "no thank you" for the hard inquiry and hung up.

Today I received a mail from Discover which indicated the reason for my denial for CLI was insufficient experience with the current CL. What concerns me is that my credit score report from TransUnion was on the back of the page.

Does that indicate a hard inquiry? Can I dispute it?

Thank you in advance!

I had a very similar situation happen with BofA. I called them back the next day and explained the situation to a credit analyst. I was able to track down the name of the CSR I spoke to the previous day who told me it'd be a SI. If you don't have the person's name, you can give them the time you called and they will probably be able to track down internally who the CSR was.

BofA agreed to put in a request to have the HI removed from my TU credit report because I was given bad information.

I would call them and explain your situation to someone higher-up than a CSR. BofA was very understanding, I would have to imagine Discover would be also since their customer service seems to be top rate.
My Cards:
Capital One Platinum MasterCard ($500)
Capital One Platinum Visa ($2k)
BofA Visa ($4k)
Citi ThankYou Preferred ($6.5k)
Chase United MileagePlus Club ($8k)
Discover IT ($8k)

Thank you for your reply.

So since I have received a credit score report, it's definitely been a hard inquiry?

Call them again, ask the rep to transfer the call to a manager. Ask him/her to pull the recorded conversation about the hardpulll.
It worked for someone in the forum before with US bank. Give a try .

All the best !

That is the exact thing a CSR told me when I called them, and was not approved as well.
I have not received a letter yet mentioning the reason of my denial. Lets hope there is no credit score report with the letter (can't afford a HI now).

Any update on your situation? Was it the hard inquiry? Did you call them?

Thank you all for the answers!

I called them and the first time I spoke with a credit analyst who was very adamant that they have not done any hard inquiry. All of a sudden she saw something in her computer and told me that "yes, an application was submitted on your behalf and since you are telling me that you asked not to go forward before that stage, we will pull the phone record and see what we can do."

I called them a week later and after fully explaining the situation, a CSR told me that I would typically be informed of the decision within a month. But she also told me that a certain "flag" that states I dispute a credit check, had not been activated on the previous request to review my file. So she activated that flag and said that we will reach out to you within a month. I'm waiting it out as of now!
