I didn't sign up for gas for the next quarter and I got this offer. I still wont sign up for it though, as it is pretty useless.
I also didn't sign up for Home Improvement stores on my Citi card, as I planned on putting those purchases on Discover. They sent me an offer for 5% back on anything up to $500.
So basically, if you don't need a category (like gas), then don't sign up for it.
This is a good data point. I actually don't mind 2% on my purchases so I can churn.
Home improvement is useful to me, because I buy Southwest and Marriott gift cards so that I get 5% on my travel purchases. It works out well for me.
