From what I have read online, and from my own experience, they seem to love anyone who can max out their card and pay off the balance. I got approved in April and I saw this 2% bonus on my account this June. In fact, last billing period I maxed out my card and paid it off, and spent even more after that (I just had a school semester begin, so I put all my tuition and books on the card).

When I got approved I already had high balances on my other cards, but now all by my Target card are being lightly used because Discover has so many targeted promotions.
American Express: Blue Cash Everyday (10k), Everyday, ; Discover It (7.3k) ; Target (2.1k)

Citi: Diamond (2k) ; Bank of America: Cash Rewards (2.6k) ; Capital One: Quicksilver (3k) , Sony ; Chase: Freedom (3.7k), Slate (3k), (Amazon) ; Barclay Ring ; Synchrony: Walmart MC, Amazon, Ebates

Check out the Sallie Mae Mastercard. 5% back on books up to $750/month.

I was actually looking for a card like that but ended up taking Discover's offer. Discover gave me a credit limit very similar to an average of my highest balances, which ends up making this card my highest credit line. The price matching also let me buy a $150 book at my school's bookstore for the $90 price tag Amazon.com was asking for right before my first class.

I have tuition payments coming up soon for the fall semester, so this 2% bonus came at the right time.

Ive read places that if you don't sign up for the quarterly categories that they are more likely to throw additional rewards at you. Same goes for Citi and Chase. I didn't sign up for gas for the next quarter and I got this offer. I still wont sign up for it though, as it is pretty useless.

I also didn't sign up for Home Improvement stores on my Citi card, as I planned on putting those purchases on Discover. They sent me an offer for 5% back on anything up to $500.

So basically, if you don't need a category (like gas), then don't sign up for it.
Credit Cards
Amex BCE 25K ---- PenFed Platinum Rewards 15.5K --- US Bank Cash+ 12K --- Discover IT 6K --- Citi Dividend 5K --- Chase Freedom 12.5K --- Amex SPG 6K --- Citi Thank You Preferred 15K

Not Used
Citi Simplicity - 5K, Sam's Club Discover - 10K

Future Cards
Sallie Mae World Mastercard

FICOs
Exp 772 - TU 781 - Equ 781

This is a good data point. I actually don't mind 2% on my purchases so I can churn.

Home improvement is useful to me, because I buy Southwest and Marriott gift cards so that I get 5% on my travel purchases. It works out well for me.

What am I missing, how does the SW and Marriott GCs play into home improvement? Do you buy them at Home Depot?
