Auto CLI from Discover

Postby Robrus1 » Mon Mar 11, 2013 11:57 am

I've had my Discover it card for about 3 months now, and I got an email a couple of days ago that said I had received an auto CLI for $500, so now my CL is an even 5K. How long should I wait to try for a more significant CLI, and would it be a HP?

If you ask for a CLI it will be a HP but if it is an automatic one it won't be. You must be charging a lot of things through your discover if they gave you an auto only 3 months in.

I see, thanks. I may wait a while before I go for a bigger CLI since it will be a HP. The first CLI that I go for will be on my CSP in a couple of months. Yeah, I have been using the Discover card a lot since I got it. I read on this forum that they like lots of usage so I've been running quite a bit through it hoping for the auto CLI. I spent approx $2500 with them when they sent me the email about the auto CLI.

I gave them that much the first month alone and more since, and I've never gotten any sort of CLI from those guys.

It really is true that creditors have 3 ways they feel about you - they really like you, they are kind of "meh" about you and can take you or leave you, or they really hate you and wouldn't give you a 100 dollar limit card with an annual fee of 200. Where I seem to stand with them is in the "meh" category, which makes me feel the same about them, in spite of their excellent customer service. I have one small recurring monthly charge on my IT right now and that's all they are getting until I see some love from them. Or I close them, whichever comes first, but I will give that until July, and if I don't see an increase by then, after 7 months, then I don't need them and it will be closed.

I've had my Discover card since 7/2011 and have never had an auto CLI. I opened the card with a limit of $1000, my highest limit at the time was 1800 and i had only a few trade lines reporting. Used it moderately to heavily considering the limit, once or twice going as high as 80% utilization. Always PIF'ed. Never got any kind of increase in 13 months, then in August last year I tried the button on the website. They directed me to call which resulted in a increase to $3000 and a hard pull. I used it pretty heavily again during Q4 last year and online Christmas shopping. Always paid in full and no auto increases. I tried again last month and got shot down with too many inquiries as the only reason (no hard pull). So I'm stuck at 3k for now.

Those guys are very little better than Cap One. How annoying. Oh well at least they gave you a CLI. They just seem so conservative, their analyst even admitted as much to me on the phone that they are conservative. Yeah yeah I get it, so when are you coming out with cards with a 300 limit that grow to 500 and stay there for 10 years I wonder. I have half a mind to close them early. Hacks me off. I have companies that are showing me the luv, maybe I need to give Discover the old heave ho over the side and not look back.

Then again I've had a few tonight so that's probably the drinks talking. But it seriously irks me. I'm trying to be patient with them, but that patience will eventually run out.

sorry 99 but your limit is at 4.5K and from your sig you have been with them since november of last year why are you so hard up on getting a higher limit? You have other cards with higher limits, just cancel if you think discover is being to stingy simple as that.

I got my it card in December 2012, so about the same time as you, 99. I'm curious why I got an auto CLI and you didn't since you've been spending quite a bit on it as well. Have you made several large purchases, or lots of small ones? I'm curious as to what the difference is. Pretty much everything I've put on my Discover has been restaurants, and I did buy a couple of NBA tickets with it, but that's about it.

I got my card June 2010 and got a limit of $500. Last year in January I called for an increase and they did a hard pull and only increased it to $1000. A few months ago I tried to get another increase but I stopped before they said they would do a hard pull and a week later I got an automatic $500 increase with no pull.

Discover is very tough about limits. I have great credit and no negatives on my report.

Since you guys asked, as already mentioned, at this point I just don't have much use for sub 5k limit cards. And Discover can be very stingy. It's like anything it depends on how much they like you - if they do they give you a nice limit, if not, you get a toy limit that takes the rest of your life to grow. The question I have is why give them the business if you already have other companies that gave you big boy limits and want your business? And I have no answer to why that would make sense.

So we'll see, if they up to 5k after 6 months which isn't really that huge an increase, I'll keep it, if not, that's a sign to me to go ahead and close and move on. I'll be at the point that I'll be able to app for something that hopefully does have a decent limit at that point if I decide that is of interest, with no inquiries this year. So no biggie really. I like their CS, but it won't save them if they want to be Scrooge.
