I prefer to get the MR points because I transfer them to FF miles since I go overseas frequently. Been to Africa, Europe (3x) and the Caribbean (2x) all since September.

These cards don't earn enough bonus points for me. I guess I could churn gift cards through them. Meh.

I actually saw the Home Improvement category coming up and thought, "Wow! How great is that! I might actually apply for an IT!"

But then I read that it was capped at $1500, ho-hum. And I just came off an app spree around December/January, so I need to let things sit for a bit. But I had similar thoughts to yours when I saw the Chase Freedom had 5% back on Starbucks... "How useless is that... when are they going to do something useful?"

To each their own. :o)

I've had AMEX for almost 10 years now. My best advice (by looking at your sig) is to wait about 2 years for AMEX. Charge what you can with what you have and PIF. With AMEX, try for the Green and work your way up. It'll take some time maybe a year or two) but assuming with a good payment history in your report you'll get there. AMEX isn't as tough with with the charge cards but it looks like your history in general is limited.
My Cards

Chase Freedom Visa Signature: $5.2K
Capital One Quicksilver Visa: $7.5K
Discover IT: $5.5K
Huntington Voice World Mastercard: $1.6K

In the garden indefinitely.

I was originally really bummed about this quarter for Discover, but I've decided to buy a new cooktop, so I'll be maxing out this category in one swipe and then it will go back in the drawer for the rest of the quarter. If it wasn't for the 5%, I'd put it on Amex or my CSP just to not participate in this largely impractical category.

If it was home improvement, and say, two other categories, that'd be fine, but just home improvement? Not impressed.
Amex Platinum
Amex BCP 21K
Amex SPG 5K
Barclaycard Arrival Plus WEMC 5K
Chase Sapphire Preferred 23.5K
Credit Union 10K
Discover IT 7.75K

I always get 5% off at lowes anyways with my Lowes credit card (which I never use as I don't own my home yet but got it for when I do buy one) Who thought of this. Plain dumb and won't be using this card those months. Will be using the Freedom and Amex.

You know Lowes and HD both sell gift cards, do you all think we can buy some gift cards and still get 5% back?
