Discover card acceptance in Europe (UK)

Postby plc44 » Sun Jan 06, 2013 1:28 pm

Headed to London this weekend, does anybody have any have any experience with Discover and being in London. I know it's accepted over the Diners Club Network, but I'm just wondering how widely accepted it is?

No foreign transaction fees is pretty cool compared to the 2.7% fee on the AmEx.

Thanks!
Discover More - $1000 (07/12)
Chase Freedom - $1000 (02/13)
American Express SPG - $2000 (08/13)
American Express Green Card - NPSL (12/12)

Yes, you may use Discover wherever Diner's Club and China Union Pay are accepted. I have heard that Diner's Club is not widely accepted and you will still have the issue of a non EMV card being accepted, especially at unmaned kiosks.

I had also heard from Discover Customer Service that Discover is accepted where Diner's Club is. Don't know about China Union as I have never heard of it. Slowly but surely, they are finding more world wide acceptance.

I was in London for a month this past summer and there were very few places that took it. I was only able to use it at Pizza Hut, Mission Burrito, and a chain Italian restaurant (I forget the name.) Pretty much everywhere takes MasterCard and Visa, and a good majority of those also take American Express.
Wallet:
AMEX BCP: 9K (2012) (every day expenses, gas, groceries, department stores)
AMEX Zync: NPSL (2011) (large expenses)
AMEX Costco: 4k (2013) (Costco, gas, and restaurants)
Discover IT: 5K (2010)
PenFed Plat Rewards Visa: 3K (2012) (Gas, Target)
USAA Plat MC: 7K (2010) (everyday expenses, places that do not take Amex or Discover)
US Bank Cash+: 7K (2012)
Target REDCard 3k (2013)

Look at Diners Club UK and Ireland - Diners Club Card Acceptance

I haven't been there for a year (going next month) but it was very rare in general (tourist places probably have more). But the link you posted was from early 2012, so maybe things have changed.

Almost 0 acceptance. Like silver said, very rare.

Almost all the ATM's are "Link" ATM's so getting cash isn't a problem, but I didn't use the Discover card anywhere. All my purchases were either in cash or with my AmEx.
