5% cash back for the first quarter in 2013

Postby Money card » Sat Dec 29, 2012 8:40 pm

so as we all know by now Discover is doing 5% cash back on movies and restaurants.
so what category will everybody be using there card for?

being the fact the holidays just passed, I'm not saying everybody on this forum was given gift cards or certificates or the American express, visa or Mastercard gift card , but some people might have been. so what will everybody be doing going out to eat, going to the movies, going out to the restaurant picking up a gift card or certificate that they later can use over the summer depending upon the restaurant they may have out door seating or going to the movies picking up a gift card or certificate and using later in the year?

if picking up a gift card or certificate to either the movies or restaurants will you be giving it to a family member or just using it yourself?

I will be using my Discover card for restaurant gift cards I plan on buying a few gift cards for the upcoming weeks after I use that 1. I also plan on buying gift cards for restaurants that have outside seating and restaurants that are in my mall. As far as I know I'm not giving any out for gifts.

I get the least value out of this category of shopping. My wife and I only go to the movies about once a quarter and most of the restaurants I frequent don't accept Discover.

It's kind of a bummer as 5% is a great return for a non-portal purchase. As a backup I always have my CSP for restaurants though.

Anyone else have problems with restaurants accepting your Discover?

This thread was from a year ago...but since the categories are the same this quarter, I suppose it does not matter.

I have yet to find a restaurant that does not accept Discover. Just so you are aware, fast food is included in this category for Discover. You may or may not eat fast food and typically it is a small purchase so the cashback is also small, but it does fall into the 5% category, none the less.

Are the places you dine typically local/family owned?

Although I now live in California, none of the Pizza Hut/Taco Bell's in Hawaii take Discover and most all of the independent restaurants don't either. I usually stay away from national chains like Chili's, RT, or Applebee's, etc. Fast food is down to once or twice a month now.

I still always ask but four out of five times they say no to Discover. I don't ket it ruin my day or anything just wish the first qtr was something a little more useful for me.

I must admit, I've found the same thing with American Express in Hawaii.
Amex UK Platinum Charge Card
Amex Blue Cash USA
Amex US Gold Corporate Card
World MasterCard Capital One UK (Free abroad + Cashback + Free Cash Withdrawals with no interest)
