Check Your Discover Statement for Cash Back

Postby cashback » Thu Dec 13, 2012 11:51 am

I just got my statement from Discover and my online purchases (two totaling $700) were credited for $1.75 cash back, that's 0.25%. Good news though, I sent them a message and within 15 minutes I got a response and they said they were going to credit my account next billing cycle for the rest.

Just putting this out there for everyone to check and make sure your cash back is correct. It was easy for me to see because I only had two charges on the card.

Were they coded as online purchases? I maxed out my $1500 but it looks like all of it was keyed by hand after the online orders.

It posted as "services" for the category. I emailed them prior to today asking if I would still get the cash back since it was categorized as services. They emailed me back and said "as long as it was purchased online you should get the 5%." But they fixed the error and all is well.

I had a chat with a rep who told me it could take two statement cycles for all purchases to be properly accounted for. She made a note for herself to check on my account when the next statement cuts around the 25th.

Like you, I only had three total transactions. All of them were coded "manually keyed" instead of "online transaction." Two of them from one vendor got the 5% anyway. The larger $1300 one from another vendor did not. I had read that if a vendor manually keys credit card payments for online orders, it doesn't count as an online purchase.

It takes a while for the cash back to post. I made 2 purchases online, one for $400, one for $700. I was credited cash back for the $400 purchase a few days after, but cash back for the $700 credit came about a month later.

Main Card: Amex Platinum
For gas: Penfed Platinum Cash Rewards
For travel & dining: Chase Sapphire Preferred

I chatted in to Discover today and they added the extra bonus to the purchase that was missing it. They may have even added an extra 0.75%. The rep thought I'd been credited at the standard 0.25% for the missing purchase. She said she'd add 4.75% to add up to the full 5%. However, I hit my $3,000 threshold months ago and got 1% credited. So, I've now officially capped my $75 of cash back possible for the quarter. Back to the sock drawer, Discover! (No offense, Irvine...)

Shop Discover is still awesome. You don't use that?

For some things, sure, but see our discussion of Freedom vs. Discover for my take on why Discover only comes out on special occasions.

My cash back looks to have loaded correctly. I've accrued the more cash back this quarter than I ever have. The online shopping option is the best category they have had.
