Just called Discover today to have my It card limit increased. I originally started off with $1,500 and wanted to increase it to $6,000. The rep transferred me to credit limit department, and I was asked why I wanted the increase. I just told him that I didn't really need the extra limit, but I just wanted it to look good on my credit report and I mostly use my Discover Escape card between my two Discover cards. Essentially the guy said in a nutshell "oh, ok" and increased it to $6,000.

Not a bad deal, but it did cost a hard pull though.

That is funny. It seeems almost like it doesn't matter what you say is the reason you want the increase. Except if you say something like I need a higher line of credit to pay an attorney to begin bankruptcy proceedings, that would get their attention! (Don't do this even joking, seriously, why poke the bear...).

I opened my More card in July 2011 with a limit of 1000 compared to my highest at the time from Chase, which was 2000. Used the card moderately most months and heavily around Christmas that year. I've never gotten an auto CLI from Discover period. I called I think September last year and asked for 3000 and told them I wanted some breathing room for my credit utilization ratio and the 1000 wasn't cutting it. The guy mentioned that he saw I had some new accounts and that they all had better limits (highest was 6600 then) and he gave me the full increase. Ive been using it pretty heavily, especially last quarter, and am planning to shoot for at least 5k this year.

After my inquiry in getting a Credit Limit Increase and telling them I didn't want a hard pull, I received a Credit Karma notification that Discover had done a hard pull. I chatted with a Discover Customer Service Rep and she didn't think a hard pull had happened. After telling her I didn't understand why I would get a notification on hard pull being done she said she would forward it to another department and that they would get back to me within 72 hours. This all happened last Wednesday and Thursday.

So basically, I have an additional inquiry and I got nothing for it because I cancelled my request for a Credit Limit Increase request...

That sucks. Anytime you ask for a CLI you have to be prepared for a hard pull.

But the thing is, when she informed it would require a hard pull, I declined and the conversation was over. That is what I find confusing...

She probably did the pull before asking and then it's too late, or some mistake happened and you got one anyway.

If you want it removed you need to keep calling them and either get a sympathetic ear, or be a big enough PITA that they do it to get rid of you. All I can tell you is NEVER believe a CSR - they may not be lying and probably aren't, they simply do not KNOW their jobs as often as not when they tell you this is or isn't a hard pull.

Personally I don't ask for CLIs. If they give me one, great, if not oh well. I have more available credit than I honestly have any use for at the current time and it might be wise to reduce that. US Bank will be the first casualty of that if it happens, given they are effectively worthless.
