Should I apply for More?

Postby kcarter609 » Sun Oct 14, 2012 3:02 pm

Ok, so you can see in my signature the cards I have. The Freedom was opened 08/2012. A little over 60 days ago. I want to get either a BCE or BCP in January, and I have 2 inquiries on my Experian from Chase when I applied for the Freedom. So if I apply for a Discover, will that be too many inquiries when I want to apply for the BCE/BCP? Or will I be OK? January will be a total of 3 years of history in good standing with AMEX if it matters.

I've been getting pre-approval letters like mad in the mail from Discover, so I was considering getting the Discover More for the 5% rotating categories.

Also, if you think a different Discover card would be better, please mention it.

Thanks

Active Cards:

Discover IT ($9.5k Limit - 10/2012)
AMEX Zync (No Pre-set Limit - 1/2010)
AMEX Blue Cash Everyday ($20k Limit - 1/2013 - Backdate to 1/2010)

So you will only have three inquiries when you apply for the Amex in January? You should be fine. I have not heard of AMEX being overly inquiry sensative. I have found that Discover and Freedom often overlap in terms of the bonus cash but Discover is a great card to have in your wallet.

I agree with CC. More isn't great outside of the bonus categories, but they do run some fun extra bonuses sometimes.

Also, Discover pulled Equifax for me, not Experian.

I think I will apply then. Also, since those 2 Chase Inquiries were done on the same day, I think they might count as 1 instead. I have other inquiries, but they are over a year old so they don't matter any more. Does anyone know if it makes a difference to apply with the pre-approval code or not?

Side note, DJ, what does REI stand for in your signature?

Also, Discover More vs. Discover IT.... People say they're the same but the IT is more friendly, so I was just wondering if anyone who has both or really knows about them can tell me which is better?

I'm in a similar situation. 2 hard inquiries in 2 months on EX from CitiBank (Denied for Citi Forward card, twice). Now I'm interested in an Amex card (either PRG or SPG or Blue Cash). What are my odds of approval for their charge card versus their credit card?

Did some research before applying. Discover primarily pulls EQ/TU nationwide (EQ primarily where I live, NJ). Applied and instantly approved for the Discover More card. (they pulled my EQ). Waiting for the card now!
Credit Union Visa: $5000 (4/11)
Discover IT $1750 (10/12)
Chase Freedom $1500 (3/13)
BofA Credit Card: $18.7k (1/02) (Authorized User)
Secured CapOne Visa: $300 (5/12)
Banana Republic Store: $1200 (5/11)
Express Next A-List: $1340 (6/11)

FICOS (as of 3/15/12):
EQ 762
EX 731
TU 747

Why did you choose the More vs. the IT? Is there any advantage?

Discover pulled TU for my CLI. They have good bonus offers, their ShopDiscover mall is good, and they have an intro 0% APR offer. but it's not a great everyday card.

I would get the Discover IT. The Discover IT and more are great everyday cards for online shoppers because ShopDiscover is very generous.
