Been "Pre-Approved" but only been in USA for 8 months

Postby mattb » Sat Oct 13, 2012 11:48 am

Hi all,

I've received a letter from Discover which says I've been pre-approved for their 5% cashback card, however I'm a permanent resident and have only been here for 9 months.

Having read posts on this and other forums, my understanding is that pre-approved is really just a marketing gimmick and that everyone is pre-approved until they are approved.

I have had a Wells Fargo secured credit card for 9 months, a SS number for 8 months, a checking account since December 2011, and a car loan for 4 months, which is in both my and my wife's name (she is a US citizen).

I wondered if anyone has been in the same boat as me or if anyone thinks that I should(n't) apply for this card. The rewards would be of benefit but, of course, I'd rather not apply for a card if it's almost certain that I'll be denied as at the moment I'm trying to build good credit history as efficiently as possible.

Thanks,

Matt

when I first started out back around the late 80's 87 or 89 I opened up my first checking account the same bank that issued the company's checks employees checks. I first tried for the Green card picked up the application at Macys garden state plaza.
in those days there were no student credit cards, or secured credit cards.. I got turned down.

I would say if you only have 1 the wells fargo secured card this might not be the best offer for you.
If I were you I would try for local banks of your area a place where you have your checking account have you thought about asking an account mgr if they would approve you for a wells fargo unsecured credit card?
if they say your not approved have you thought about a looking into 1 of these applications a TD Bank credit card or key bank ?
even a small bank , like in my area it would be hudsonvalley savings bank. your bank would be called something else have you thought about applying for there credit cards?

Hi Money Card,

Thanks for your reply.

I did ask a manager at Wells Fargo about 3 months ago whether I could be approved for an unsecured card and his response was that I'll be informed  . Perhaps I should have pushed a bit more and asked him to get an assessment or something (this was all just a brief conversation).

My wife already has the AmEx Blue Preferred and I wanted to try and compliment the cash back that card offers with the 5% from Discover (particularly as they are offering 5% cashback on all online shopping - which is where I tend to do all my shopping - and Xmas is coming up).

Failing the Discover then perhaps the next best alternative would be Chase Freedom but I haven't received any offers from them.

Credit-building comes first and then cashback cards second. Perhaps I'll sit and wait on the Wells Fargo card to become unsecured and take it from there.

If you got a pre-approval use the code from it online and go for it...it actually is a real easy card to get in my opinion and you have a lot more credit history than I had when I got my More card.
