FYI This Weekend 2% Cashback at Grocery Stores

Postby CC Deville » Sat Jun 30, 2012 11:37 am

Hi Everybody,

Just an FYI, beginning yesterday (6/29) and ending tomorrow (7/1) Discover is offering 2% at grocery stores. You need to sign up for it of course.

Also I noticed on my account the allusive "Request Increase" button was back so I requested a $1K increase and was approved for a current limit of $9,000. Whoo hoo. I had not received an increase on my Discover since 7/2005 when they gave me an auto CLI of $1,800. I am not sure if this resulted in an hard or soft inquiry. I understand they pull TU and if so, no big deal as there are no inquiries on my TU.

After reading this I went on the Discover site and requested an increase of $2,500 and got a $500 bump to $9,250. It says "this will not affect your credit score." If you're not happy with the paltry amount they give you, you can opt to take your chances with a credit report pull for something higher.
American Express: Blue Cash Preferred (groceries, 6%; gas, department store, 3%); Gold Delta SkyMiles (Delta Air Lines, 2 miles/dollar, free checked bag).
US Bank: Cash+ (utilities, phone, internet, restaurant, 5%; drugstores, 2%).
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (everything, 2%); Fidelity Visa (everything, 1.5%).
Chase: Freedom (rotating, 5%); Amazon (Amazon.com, 3%); PriorityClub (IHG hotels, 5 points/dollar); Sapphire (not in use).

*All cards are registered with PriorityClub IDine program for 8 points/dollar at participating restaurants.

It's paltry but compared to Cap One, it's pretty sweet.

Does the online credit limit increase looks like this ?
I've been holding off thinking it's a hard pull.
Cap! QuickSilver VISA 2005 $6500
Chase Freedom MC 2006 $5000
Amex Sky 1999 $2000
BCE 1999 $8800
NFL 2013 $1500
Discover IT 2013 $3500
FICO July 16/2012 ---- 742 Experian (Amex)
BK comes off ---- 9/2014

Yep. That is what mine looked like. I got to this page that you attached after clicking the "Request Increase" button.

I didn't intend for this to become a CLI thread. Sorry about that! But if you have any grocery shopping to do tomorrow, Sunday, July 1st be sure to sign up for the 2% Cashback Bonus offer!

Kinda gave up on using Discover card after getting Amex Blue 6% for grocery since most of my shopping is at the supermarket.

Discover card needs to start offering more grocery, one month a year not doing it for me.

You only get the 6% back after a year. If you do enough shopping, it pays for the 75 dollar fee, no doubt.

With Discover you can get your cash back at any time. And you actually deal with CSRs who know what they are doing which is great, unlike what I dealt with at Amex to be honest (I could barely understand the last Amex CSR I spoke with). I'm still not a fan of the CC companies, but Discover has pretty much risen to the top in terms of how I view them.

I agree. From the moment I opened my Discover in 1999 through 2004 I used it for EVERYTHING. But then I changed my Citibank Platinum Select to a Dividend and started using my Dividend for everything because the cash back was WAY better and as a MasterCard, was accepted everywhere.

Fast foward to 2012 and Discover still has those tiers (0.25%, 0.25% and 0.50%) up to $3,000 before you start earning 1%. And like you said, they offer groceries for ONE month! (and even then it was like they threw that in at the last minute this year because when the cashback calendar came out in January, groceries were completely removed) I am not a man of means and as such I do not spend a lot on things other than the basics of life. I could care less about 5% back on restaurants and movies for 3 monhts, I mean come on! So I have switched to the BankAmericard Cash Rewards as I get better cash back on gas and groceries all year. I use Chase Freedom for the 5% bonus catagories like gas and groceries.

I still like Discover and I keep mine active, but they need to be more competitive (start at 1% and offer an entire quarter of 5% back on groceries) now that Chase, BofA, Citibank and Amex have better cash back cards. Even US Bank is getting into the cash back card business.
