I was told by a rep on the phone line that to request a CLI over the phone would be a hard inquiry, so I imagine the online request would be the same. But I can also say that after I made the call for an increase and opted not to go through with it because the rep said it would be a hard pull, I got an automatic increase just a couple days afterward to just $100 short of what I told the rep I would be requesting. Not sure if it was just a coincidence or if my inquiry triggered some sort of review on my account which led them to increase my credit limit. Maybe try that out and see if you get the same result?

I was told last week by a rep it depends. He said they can tell you if it's going to be a hard pull first so you can decide not to do it. I should have asked for a rough idea of what criteria they would use to decide but who knows.

It's not a hard: you type in what you want, Discover will counter and a message will come up that if you don't want the counter offer, they can pull a hard and reconsider.

I'll give it a try going to ask double my credit to 9K, hope they don't counter $500 like last time.

It will either be a hard pull which it will tell you about after you ask for your new limit. Or they will offer you something smaller which is a soft pull. I asked for 1000 (hard pull) they said they could give me 500 with no credit pull. so I took it.

So a few weeks ago I tried the online credit limit increase just to see what would happen. I got a message saying something about not being able to do it. The next morning I got a voicemail from Discover asking me to call them back about a request I had. I called them back and spoke with this guy who was like yeah we need to pull your credit if you want to do this so I said nevermind. Right now I just checked my credit score tracker and saw that I had an inquiry on my TransUnion from that date. I'm seriously confused now.Does requesting it online automatically constitute a hard pull? This contradicts what I was told by the Discover rep.. FML
