Getting 5% cash back on movies is a bad idea

Postby Money card » Tue May 01, 2012 9:14 pm

What does everybody think of having movies over beauty? Discover wants us to put Discover in front of our other cards. They want to be our no.1 card.

As we all know in the 2nd quarter for the 5% cash back there categories are restaurants and movies. Do you think if they really want us to use their card, they could have changed movies and replaced it with beauty stores, places like L'Occitane, Body shop, Bath and Body Works, and Sephora? I know there will be people buying flowers (the people who don't care about malls and who don't like to shop) but I would imagine these stores will be crowded.

Last December they had 5% cash back on fashion, department stores and restaurants. Why couldn't they give 5% back on beauty, home improvement and of course restaurants?

Movies are for the winter which would be quarter no.1

The 5% at movies and restaurants is great. Normally I don't use credit to pay for food or movies, but with this promotion I went to Red Lobster as well as the local AMC dine in theater and paid both times with Discover. I am quite pleased with restaurants because I do eat out a few times a month and the 5% will add up for me. For someone like me beauty stores would not be a category I would like seeing as how I never shop there and go to the movies more often. Plus May and June have some big movies coming out and I think Discover customers will appreciate that, I do!

Credit card haters at the cinematheque!

Postby jeffysdad » Wed May 02, 2012 1:49 pm

A few years ago I was paying for popcorn and a Coke at a theater and the guy behind me apparently saw the credit card in my hand and sniffed to his companion that he would never use a credit card to pay for small stuff like theater concessions.

So just be warned that if you use your cc at the cinema, you'll be vulnerable to the wrath of people who don't know how to use credit cards properly and are apparently seething with hatred for those of us who do, or something like that.

*All cards are registered with PriorityClub IDine program for 8 points/dollar at participating restaurants.

No but I was talking to 1 of the account mgrs 1 day, I asked them a question about my closing day of my Kohls purchase and the account mgr mentioned, they want me to use Discover as my primary credit card.

But no I didn't receive anything in the mail about being a card choice for all purchases, I didn't receive a new card.

Actuallyit includes May. If you sign up for restaurants and movies you get April, May and June.

At this time of year do you think it would make more sense to have 5% cash back on beauty or have movies?

I also last went to Red Lobster, but I went last week. I don't use credit cards for fast food restaurants, but I do use them for eating out in restaurants. I have been using my Discover card every Friday.

So you buy mom something different for mothers day like Flowers?

But I see a lot of people at my local malls, I know at stores like Bare Essentials or Origins, I would imagine they are using a debit card, Chase Freedom Bank of America credit card etc. at those types of stores. If Discover had beauty in this quarter and movies last quarter, more people would use the card.

But Andy I do understand from your stand point.
