The one with the fee is called the Escape card.
First of all on the American Express Platinum card you get airport access lounge to the Delta Crown, US Air. You get concierge service dining reservations, help getting sporting ticket events, 10,000 dollars coverage on broken items, free airline tickets for a companion on some int'l flights. Annual fee 450.
With the Gold if you need to leave the country theres a 2.7% transaction fee. Not sure about checked luggage or lost luggage how many times does this happen. Annual fee 125.
Premier Rewards Gold same as Gold except you get 3x the points on airfare and 2x the points on grocery stores and gas. Annual fee 175.
Green Card is nothing fancy. No event tickets we have to wait same as the rest of the public. We don't get help making dining reservations. Car has to be more than 50 miles from home if you need roadside.
Foreign transaction fee 2.7 %. Annual fee 95.00.
No interest on any of these cards. They are charge cards.
With the Discover Escape there's no concierge service, no airport lounge, you're not covered on any broken merchandise. For example let's say you went into the college basketball store and their drinking glass was too close to the edge, let's say that the sales person says you have to pay for it Discover doesn't cover you. You have to remember this is a Discover card, so when you go out to some restaurants they don't take this card. Not sure about the check luggage, baggage protection. You can transfer your miles to Continental and United. With American Express they ended it Oct 30th 2011. There's lot's of places that don't take Discover.
This is a lending credit card so there's interest on this card and the Miles card if not paid in full. There's no foreign transaction fee. You will see a credit limit. Annual fee 60.00.
With the United card you get 2 passes for the presidents lounge, this is a Visa so it's accepted everywhere you would go. Baggage protection on United, on other airlines not sure. You get concierge service to help with dining reservations, sporting events room upgrades. Any travel plans, hotels, car rentals. You get your bags checked free. If you're flying on united and you purchase an item from united you get 2 points per dollar. Not sure if there's a foreign tranaction fee. Annual fee 95.00.
With the Miles card because they are not co-branded with any airline you don't get any special deals like on the Delta gold card, you get up to 9 first checked bags for free.
I guess it comes down to where you fly, what perks are important to you and what can you afford to put on a card.
