How do you spend in your 5% categories?

Postby Money card » Sun Nov 27, 2011 1:07 am

For Discover More and the Freedom from Chase, has anybody signed up for the 5% for the rest of the year? Will you be combining clothing stores, department stores and restaurants or just using 1 of those? if so which 1?

for anybody that's going to restaurants will you leave the tip on the credit card slip or will you round off to the nearest dollar and leave the tip in cash?

as for me when I buy merchandise, I will be using my capital1 venture visa, when I buy gift cards I will be using my green card. but when I go out to eat I will be using my Discover more card just for 5% at restaurants. since our caps our 300.00 I won't leave the tip on the credit card slip, I won't round off either. so I will leave the tip in cash.

what's everybody else doing? I signed up yesterday.

I have a Discover More card.

Unfortunately, since the current 5% has a cap of $300 and runs from October-December, I already hit the max. Was a mix of eating out and some essential department store purchases.

Pretty disappointing, really, considering the much higher caps on other cards.

so you're in St Louis. are the prices of clothing stores, department stores less where you live than in the New Jersey area? depending upon which stores, for example, is a shirt less in your gap than an area like mine? or gap is gap? I only use them as an example.

Discover is lower than the chase Freedom but now consider this - Chase is having 5% cash back on movies, department stores and restaurants. who goes to the movies during the holiday season?

I'm afraid I can't really answer that with any certainty.

I do know that typically, looking nationwide, prices in St. Louis are average if not below average.

In my opinion, the categories for Chase/Discover are roughly the same, they just occur at different times of the year. I'd much rather have a $1,500 cap in a quarter, or $75 compared to Discover's $300 cap in a quarter, or $15 regardless of which category is when.

St. Louis pretty much has the same department stores the rest of us have thanks to all the mergers and aquisitions. The merchandise sold at each Gap is the same everywhere. Macy's will have slightly higher end merchandise at various stores depending where the store is at. So, the Macy's in Paramus will have nicer and higher end items then a Macy's in Newark (if there is one in Newark). But you get the drift.

New Jersey has Bloomingdale's but that is the only thing I can think of that New Jersey would have that would be more expensive. I hear they tax the crud out of you so maybe your tax rates are higher than St. Louis.

Many people go to the movies during the holidays, but I cannot imagine enough to get any use out of the 5%.

I really only use my cashback cards for the extra 5% at grocery stores and gasoline stations. The other catagories are rather useless to me. Another reason why I should get the BankAmericard 1-2-3 Cash Rewards Card......

Many people go to the movies all year round not just the holidays. at this time of year which is more important going to the movies or giving a family member a shirt from the Gap, J crew, Ann Taylor, zuminez etc?

If you ask me clothing stores are more important than the movies. movies should be done January , February etc..
