Pre-approved for Discover More.. should I risk it?

Postby c0Ld » Mon Mar 14, 2011 11:45 am

3 months ago, I was declined for Zync due to a large number of inquiries on my account (mostly from turning utilities and such on in my name - just moved in to my own place in January) and the newness of my credit report (8? months). I just got pre-approved for Discover More, though, which would be awesome to have since my main card right now is a credit union Visa with terrible rewards but a great APR. I never carry a balance, and have an installment in my name paid off, and no real outstanding debt (maybe $200 on my card, but as I said, I PIF every month). Think it's worth a try? I was going to wait until next year before any more applications to let all my inquiries fall off. I understand that since a pre-approval isn't guaranteed, I may just end up with another declined inquiry on my report to worry about for 12 months.

Google told me that Discover likes to pull Equifax, so I decided to pull my report on annualcreditreport. Apparently my Equifax has 3 inquiries but everything in great standing. I think it might be worth it, although I plan to wait at least a week for my latest payments to go through. I know my Experian looks a lot uglier right now then my Equixfax, which might be why Amex didn't want me for Zync in January.

I got a Discover More Student card with a $250 starting CL with a 2 month credit history about a year ago. Don't know if it'll work for you but 11 months later they gave me a $500 CLI and it has been my primary card ever since. I'd say go for it... AMEX is very picky afaik.

Well, I'm sure the student card is easier to get though. I'd actually be trying to get it instead, but last I heard they require you to be in a 4 year college and I'm still taking classes in a community college. A card I just paid off should have its statement cut tomorrow, I think I'll get it at least a week or so to post to my report before going for it.

Well, I decided to swing for it, got a message saying I was approved but to call them. 15 minutes later before I got a chance they called me and I was approved for $1,000! Not a great limit, but from what I'm reading on reviews Discover will grow with me for awhile! I'm excited - finally I can stop applying for new cards! This is exactly the portfolio I want until I start my full career :)

Congtrats on your approval and enjoy the card. I am in a similar boat as you as I received a preapproval offer for the More card. I am on the fence about applying. FIrst, I am concerned I will be denied and then have a useless inquiry. Seocnd, I am afraid of approval but with a low limit. The only reason I want the card is boost my total credit limit so as to positively affect ultiization. I have a gold Amex card and a useless mastercard with a low limit. Thanks for sharing your story.

Are you sure about that? I don't see any reason why they wouldn't consider a community college as being a college student.

Either way, you got approved for the regular Discover More. Good job and as you mentioned, it shouldn't be too hard to get that limit raised down the road if manage your account good. Have you checked out the ShopDiscover yet? It is probably my favorite Discover perk.

The only reason I want the card is boost my total credit limit so as to positively affect ultiization.

If that's the case and your credit is iffy then probably Discover isn't the best option. Discover has been known to be conservative with credit limits for those that don't have top tier credit scores.

I've been staring at it online and itching to try it out. I do most of my shopping online with the exception of groceries already, so this could actually net me a couple hundred a year in savings all by itself. I'm excited!

The CSR that approved my application quoted Tuesday for when my card will come in the mail, obviously every since since then I've been checking my mailbox 3 times a day... I'm hoping it comes a day early tomorrow since I live 2 hours from Chicago where they print most of their cards according to Google.

I'm really excited to have gotten in with Discover. I personally dislike some of the bigger Amex cards and was always interest in Discover, but the last time I applied I was insta-declined due to a lack of history. Really, unless I move and lose my credit union membership credit card, I don't see any reason for me to be applying for a new card for several years now. It's a great feeling.

I was right, my shiny new card came in today! I almost had a heart attack because the envelope had a small tear in it like someone had tried to get at the card, but it was just in the corner and there's no way anyone got the card number, so I shook it off as the mailman being in a hurry. Activated after 5 minutes of a nagging sales pitch for the payment protection plan! I've got 10 days to go shopping and enjoy the last of this season's 5% bonus! Sadly April - June doesn't seem like something I'll take much advantage of, though.

Despite the nagging sales pitches, I must say I'm already impressed by Discover's CSRs. The person I talked to was clearly new as she stuttered a bit, but she sounded professional and happy as always. Working in a customer service call center myself, I know that it's really, really hard to be nice all day and not sound like you've already had 200 calls that day. I wish we could get some more CSRs this good. They definitely must have strict hiring regulations.

Ha!

Well congratulations on your new Discover More! I hope you were able to spend a bit on the 5% categories during the last 10 days of march. Out of the rewards calender the current quarter, April through June, is one of the better ones in my opinion. However for me personally the home improvement is of little use since I rent, not own. The best season was probably last quarter since the cap was $800 and restaurants was also a category.

I also have been very satisfied with Discover's customer service. There is a person on here that has posted several negative credit card reviews regarding their service but aside from that, it seems most people like it. I have no idea how you, Discover or any other CSR can do their job and sound cheery all day long. I would make a very bad CSR because I have a tendency to be grumpy and talk back to people, ha!
