After a month with Discover what I've learned

Postby cltphotog » Sun May 07, 2017 5:38 pm

I must say I was a bit nervous when I decided to let my new Discover card be the lead CC with me from NC to California. All of the stories you hear about no one taking Discover cards etc had me leaning on my company issued MC and Amex, but I wanted the double cash reward and this was an expense heavy trip that would net me some decent rewards so I let if fly. Needless to say I had no issues with the card even the $1,144.00 dinner which was the second charge to even hit the card and it was across the country.

I've used the card at some small gas stations I was certain it would get rejected or little Mexican restaurants that I knew wouldn't take it but nope it was accepted everywhere with only one place a hamburger franchise called Cook Out which would not take my Amex either. The little tiny town I live in takes Discover when I pay my water bill and my power bill, cell phone, and wife's car payment all with Discover. I also highly rate their iPhone app especially if you have an I watch as the charge hits the watch just as you are putting the card away.

It's hard to find any issues with the service and acceptance of the Discover card and tie that with a hefty credit limit this card a solid performer especially when you have a table of 10 dinner guest not the time to get declined!

I've been very, very happy with Discover lately. Rather than declining my card whenever a transaction seems unusual (yes, Chase, I'm looking at you) Discover shoots me an email with a "this was me" or "this wasn't me" choice.

I suppose they'll block additional transactions if you don't confirm the transaction within a certain amount of time, but this seems to me a good way to handle it.

I wish my experience was as good. I once passed on getting 10% cash back with Discover at a restaurant because they had declined a purchase the day before...even with a travel notice and previous approved purchases nearby.

I was in a small group and the restaurant was very busy, so a decline would have been both embarrassing and a big delay.

Apart from a hiccup when I first got my CSP, I've had no trouble with Chase declines. No problems with Amex, Citi, or Barclaycard (though the last I've not pushed hard). Discover has been the repeat offender.
