Discover vs American Express?

Postby Mahler18 » Sat Jun 02, 2012 6:12 pm

(Updated 2013) Who's better, Discover or American Express? I came here to get a Discover card but after spending an hour reading credit card reviews and posts on this site I am honestly on the fence and cannot decide. :(

On one hand Discover has 5% cash back with their new "it" card for 2013 and with no annual fee that's hard to beat. Then I saw the American Express Gold with the 3-2-1 rewards but that has a $175 annual fee. The Costco card has a good program too. I don't have a Costco membership but I would almost get one to get the credit card. Who is better for rewards, Discover or American Express?

It really all comes to down to personal preference if you ask me. I've had my Discover More card since 2008 and their rewards are great, especially if you take advantage of the rotating 5% cash back throughout the year. However, I have had my American Express since August and it became my main card. I like the customer service and added benefits you get with using it (I have the 3-2-1 Gold Card). Keep in mind however that that card comes with a fee where the Discover More card has no annual fee. My friend has a Costco True Earnings and the percentage for rewards seems real good. If cash back is what you're after then also check out the American Express Blue Cash card. You get the benefits of American Express (such as extended warranty) with the annual fee.

They're are plenty of reviews on the site of all different cards and you will probably get plenty of different people saying positives and negatives of each card. If it were me, my preference is AmEx, however no matter what you decide make sure to also get a Visa or Master Card to use at places where a Discover or AmEx may not be accepted.

Discover vs American Express......that's a tough one. I would say AMEX is better for bigger spenders b/c most of their reward plans don't have caps. Discover does and gives 5% but there are caps every quarter on the amount.

It all depends on how much you spend and what you buy.

Discover is a more rewards-oriented company. American Express focuses on benefits first and rewards second.

The better choice will be different for each individual dependent on their needs.

I have both AMEX and Discover. Have been an AMEX holder since 2003 but, decided to try the Cash Back from Discover. Both are great cards but, I will tell you, I have more issues with people taking Discover than I do with my AMEX. My Gold AMEX is my primary card at this point but, I do give kudos to Discover. I would say get what one works best for you.
