As much as I've ragged on Discover here before, the fact is is that they're accepted at more places than Amex is. Most of the bills I pay online don't even take Amex at all, but they'll be glad to take Discover, Visa and MCs.
Macy's TLs (21k), Lowes (17k), CSP (10k), Sam's Club (10k), Nordstrom (5k), AARP (4.2k), Freedom (3k), Discover (1.5k), Quicksilver (2k), BoA (3k), Barclaycard Arrival (2.5k), Amazon Store (6k), Paypal (4.9k), Sam's Club MC (3.6k), Walmart MC (1.2k)

Discover is pretty aggressive in recruiting merchants. There have been three merchants I have reported for not taking Discover (including a university) and Discover successfully recruited all three. Two of them, they sent me a letter that they'd work to recruit them. The third one, the university, first letter said they'd not been successful in getting them to take Discover but they'd keep working on them - a few months later, it happened and they sent me a follow up letter.

Bills I can't pay with AmEx: cable/internet bill (Atlantic Broadband), electric bill (Penelec), car insurance (Progressive). Bills I can pay with Discover: literally every bill I have.

I just got approved for Discover IT card. I don't even have my card yet.
I don't plan on it But just in case, do you get a PIN for cash withdrawals? In my area I'm not sure all the places that accept Discover.

You will not get the cash advance PIN in the mail, but you can set a (new) PIN online or by phone, which is extremely convenient.

You can always ask the merchant if they accept the card, or just hand in the card without even asking. If they accept the card they should just swipe it; but it's always a good idea to have another form of payment, just like the DMV here do not accept Visa.
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015
All EMV.

^ I can't wait until the day I don't have to have a backup card for merchants that don't accept discover

most food trucks use square which takes discover

my favorite shops with exception of nap and it's brother and outlet store which doesn't .. does

just got 10% on sephora through the shop portal and 5% back on it, free shipping and I got 20$ off gc from sephora so my purchase of 50 became 30 with cashback :)
