Discover Auto CLI

Postby MrAB3 » Fri Oct 07, 2016 5:32 pm

Hi everyone, this is my first post on the blog. I have a question about my Discover card that I can't find the answer to online.

I have had my Discover It card for almost two years now and I haven't received an auto CLI yet. They only gave me a $500 "toy" limit because I was in college and still building my credit history. I did not get their student card because I applied during my last semester of college and I didn't think the student card was practical for the long term.

I also have a Chase Freedom card that received an auto CLI four months after getting approved. This card was my first and I was nowhere near my limit when I used it solely.

I have read past entries in the blog about people who have received an auto CLI after two years of membership. Does this happen for everyone? And if not, what are my chances of getting an auto CLI from Discover?

Thank you so much for your responses.

Is it an individual or joint account?
Love: IHG, Platinum, Sallie Mae, AA Plat, CSP
Like: Discover, ED, BCE, Hyatt, Arrival, Freedom
Might drop: BrooksBros, Prestige (Costco PC?)
Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold
Letting new accounts cool off since May
Really not sure what I'll add next or when

If you'd like a CLI, I'd just request one. In my experience they've been generous with CLIs, and I always request them only if it will be a soft pull. Of course, you could take a HP if you needed to and felt it was worth it, but the point is there's no need to hope for an auto CLI when you can call in and see if they'll give you one with a SP.

Hi Vattené. I just went to my Discover account and requested a CLI and they denied me outright. They didn't say why, but they did say that they're going to send me a letter in the mail with details soon.

Thank you for your advice. I'm going to stay the course, maintain my relationship with Discover, and try again in a few months.

Well, at least you'll have their reason(s) for doing so.

In my opinion not going for the student card was a mistake. It is the same card as the regular one except the signup bonus is not as good, but you usually get a better limit. My first card was the Discover IT Student and they gave me $1500 with no other credit history other than my deferred student loans loans.
Discover IT - $5,700
Chase Freedom - $5,700
Costco Citi - $13,000
Sallie Mae - $4,000
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $6,000
Chase Sapphire Reserve - $19,500
Citi Double Cash - $6,500
Amex BCE - $13,000

FICOs: Discover (777), SallieMae (764), Amex (767), Citi (772)
FAKOs: CK- TU (760), EQ (760)

I went for Discover IT a second time and got it with a $1400 CL. It was around the holidays (not sure if that was helpful or not, but all my cards have been acquired in the October-December time frame). No CLIs yet, but that'll come once the rebuilding process is over. (almost!)
Wallet: Chase Freedom, Discover IT

Future: TBD

I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully the letter will give you something useful you can work towards. I'd keep trying with them, though. If you manage your account well and try for one every few months I think you are likely to have luck sooner or later. Personally, I like calling in to talk to a CSR so I can make sure they try it with a SP. I believe that they always do this and that isn't necessary, but an added benefit is you might have more luck if you talk to a person. You can at least explain you'd like to use your Discover card more, but $500 is pretty limiting ;)

I'm going to wait for the letter and see if it gives me any further details. If it doesn't, I'm going to call in and speak with a CSR.

I will keep you posted on what happens this week. I am confident that I will get my CLI sooner or later.
