Discover Q4 categories

Postby kdm31091 » Sat Aug 06, 2016 9:40 am

Q4 for Discover is on the website now. Amazon.com, department stores, and Sam's Club.

Relatively lackluster for my use. Not a huge amazon shopper. Department stores may be nice for one or two Christmas gifts but nothing huge. No local Sam's Club. Would have been nice if they had done at least BJ's and Sam's Club. They're obviously trying to compete with Freedom, but frankly I am just growing tired of rotating categories. The card goes basically unused for months on end. I wish they would allow you to select from a list.

I'm thinking many people are feeling the category fatigue - hence the popularity of 1.5% cash back cards now.

I think they should make a metal card studded with precious gems. Then I would be proud to whip it out (the card) in front of any clerk.

That could make the card useful for me, unless that made it more restrictive and had to choose from Amazon and department stores. I do like the department store category a lot, but it's very lackluster for me at that time of year. I live in Florida and hardly have any need for anything the rest of the country considers "winter." It would have been much more useful if they made Q3 department stores, moved home improvement to earlier in the year, and leave gas at the end of the year. I never got a good use out of Discover this year because the categories have been very untimely for when I use those categories most. They should release all the categories for the year and let you select when to use them.

Freedom used to give 3% automatically in a quarter's biggest three categories (from a long list of possibilities), I've read. Presumably this was before it offered 5%.
Love: IHG, Platinum, Sallie Mae, AA Plat, CSP
Like: Discover, ED, BCE, Hyatt, Arrival, Freedom
Might drop: BrooksBros, Prestige (Costco PC?)
Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold
Letting new accounts cool off since May
Really not sure what I'll add next or when

Anyone know if Wal-Mart is considered a Department Store?

It is not. Discover's merchant category is "Discount Stores," at least for the one near me.

I doubt any lender will categorize it as a department store.

I don't think any issuer considers Walmart a department store. Department stores are things like Sears, Boscovs, Macy's, Kohl's.

I'm really disappointed in the categories to be honest. Makes me sad, as Discover has been good to me. The limit has grown appreciably over the years and they've dropped the APR steadily when requested. The problem is just that I have no reason to use it 95% of the time. The only thing I get any large use out of is restaurants. I realize it's an individual thing, but I just wish they'd spice up the categories a bit. They have been essentially the same since I first got the card 5 years ago.

This could be the first full billing cycle where I haven't used my Discover in over a year. I typically love the amazon category but have been trying to cut back on my spending and Amazon is an easy target. I go to Sam's about once a month and I have several 4th quarter birthday's plus Christmas so I will get some use out of it next quarter.

I have been using my Sam's MC for gas (5%) and dining/travel (3%) lately. The only other major category is grocery which I have been using my PRG for but am probably going to eliminate that as well to simplify my lineup. I'd really like to have only two or three bills to pay each month...

Chase: Freedom & UA Club USAA: Signature Visa & American Express
Discover it Bank of Hawaii Hawaiian Airlines WEMC Synchrony Sam's MC
