It's pretty disappointing for a Christmas shopping quarter. I hope they don't start narrowing the categories more and only letting a few big companies qualify for 5%.

Unfortunately, I have noticed a general trend since I have had this card (over 5 years) that the categories have steadily become narrower. Not every quarter, but in general, yes. My guess is that it is cheaper for Discover to simply offer a couple specific retailers, since if you don't shop at Target, your 5% spend is going to be zero. If they do a broad category, more people get to take advantage and get 5%.

Discover has a lot going for it in terms of customer service but the categories have been lackluster at times (in all fairness, Freedom has had its share of silly categories too, and Dividend is always very specific too).

Q4 2017 is just Walmart and department stores on Chase Freedom. Department stores is a slightly larger category, but it's also not very appealing as groceries or restaurants.
American Express: Blue Cash Everyday (10k), Everyday, ; Discover It (7.3k) ; Target (2.1k)

Citi: Diamond (2k) ; Bank of America: Cash Rewards (2.6k) ; Capital One: Quicksilver (3k) , Sony ; Chase: Freedom (3.7k), Slate (3k), (Amazon) ; Barclay Ring ; Synchrony: Walmart MC, Amazon, Ebates
