Discover pretended to switch me to Discover IT

Postby TXviking » Sun Jul 10, 2016 11:25 pm

Received this email from Discover:

Txviking,
your Discover it benefits are now active.
Just a heads up—your account has switched over to Discover it. Your new card is on its way, and you can expect it in 3-5 days.
Thank you!

Some of you may recall that I asked about the benefit of switching over a while back. However, I had not yet taken any action to do so, so this email caught me by surprise. I called Discover last night and was assured that the email went out by accident and that I would not be PCed to a different card without my consent.

Has anyone else had this happen?

My brother also got that same email, which I found really strange because the account they referenced in the email is already a Discover It card. He figured they just sent it by mistake.

No similar experience. I did PC from the It Chrome to the It a number of months ago though.

Which card do you have?
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

I have the Discover Open Road card currently. Was actually thinking about PCing as discussed in http://creditcardforum.com/discover-diners-club-f6/12948-discover-open-road.html

I don't know if this appeals to you or is possible, but the Discover It Chrome is 2% on Gas and Groceries (with no cap that I was ever made aware of). If you don't like the rotating categories, but want something more useful than you have, it might be a good fit.

Not sure what other general cash back cards you have that you could be using / what the opportunity cost of using that card is vs. a Double Cash or something (I'm pretty sure you don't have that if my memory serves, but not sure).

The Citi Costco is 4% on gas. Capped at $7K, but even I rarely spend that much on fuel in a year. So that trumps Chrome handsomely.
2% groceries is not enough of a boost over 1% UR points (CSP) to make that worthwhile. I think between the Discover IT and the Discover Chrome, the IT does make more sense.

I had the exact same experience - 2 e-mails announcing my changeover to Discover It, which I had not requested. I currently have the Discover More card and find it's just fine as is. Discover Customer Service gave me the same answer...that "It must have been sent by mistake". So now I'm waiting to see if, in fact, a new card arrives in the mail. Seems rather odd, especially considering it's happened to others. Normally I have no problems with Discover, and it's my preferred card (since 1990).

I think I meant restaurants and not groceries by the way but I still think the It is more versatile and is much more of an active product than the Chrome and is probably a better bet for that reason alone.

Ah. That dumps Chrome down even further, as the CSP also has 2% UR points for restaurants.

It is a phased out product...probably for good reason.
