The CLI gravy continues

Postby MemberSince99 » Sat Jun 04, 2016 7:30 pm

Discover has been more generous than any lender I've personally had lately. Yeah, I'm as surprised by that as you are given their past.

But I have to say, these guys are killing everyone else these days, at least as far as limit with me.

My limit as of last week was 21k. It had increased over 10k in the last 6 months. Not bad for no hard pull. So on Wednesday night, I thought well you know it's probably pushing the limits of good taste, but why not hit the CLI button again? They will probably say no, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

So I hit it and got the review message. I thought well I gave it my best. Hey I'm happy with the limit. I will admit - I'm doing it just to see what I can get. That is just human nature. And we here on these forums, we are the 1% of the credit card population, the ones who push the boundaries and have more credit cards in 6 months than most people have all their lives. If we weren't, we probably wouldn't be here. Sure there are a few just looking to rebuild and who will go on to get in with Discover and Amex and a couple others and call it a day. But we are the folks who are always pushing the limits to find out what we can do.

I checked Thursday and then Friday and nothing so I assumed it was a dead issue. Half heartedly decided to look again today - limit was 27k. I was like holy bleep! No hard pull no request for financials they just increased the limit another 6k.

Stingy, not anymore, not even close. I know not everyone is getting this, but if you can you should. Aside from this being the highest limit I have ever personally had on a card, they also gave me the 10.99% APR on it from the get-go which was their lowest rate at the time (not sure what it is today). With the great rewards and all American CS if I had to pick ONE card this would be it.

The ONLY problem is it's not accepted everywhere, sadly. Acceptance here in my area (Milwaukee) is decent but it's still a problem at some places. (Amex is a lot worse in that regard here). So I would want to have a Visa or MasterCard as a fall back. But if I had to pick only ONE, Discover would be that one.

I know Discover is fairly often not accepted online, but I think I was not allowed to swipe it only once in my one year of using it (I don't remember where). And I've used it almost exclusively everywhere I've been.

So Discover doesn't do a hard inquiry when you request for a CLI? Is that the case every time, or just most of the times?
Current cards: BankAmericard CR, BankAmericard BBR, Citi Double Cash, Chase Freedom, AmEx BCE, Discover It
Wishlist: US Bank Cash+

Discover recently approved my CLI request with no inquiry at all. No HP showed up; they claimed they based the increase solely on "internal records."

I don't have an easy way of finding out if they did a SP, but definitely no HP.

They did not do one for me. However This is not always the case it's always a ymmv situation.

I can tell you that the Discover CSR I spoke to about my CLI gave me the option of declining a HP if they couldn't improve based on internal records alone. So if in doubt, call rather than push that button on the web site.

Is this a new-ish Discover? Or it survived the last mass extinction?
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

Not relevant to thread: I just noticed your gardening date. What is your intention? Or maybe even goal?

How many new accounts do you have in the last 12 months? 24 months? 36 months?

What is your AAoA? Do you have any negatives on your profiles?
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

No super-specific date or goal. I've got enough points to last a while. I'm primarily letting inquiries die and accounts age to reduce the risk of AA (because I like the rewards programs of what I have, not because I need the credit). I'm also pretty close to or at my limit in terms of long-term card complexity. I will chase bank/brokerage bonuses occasionally.

As far as any new cards, I'd be mostly interested in big travel bonuses, closing the cards after a year or two.

My history started in 2013, so 5/11/all 14 cards within 12/24/36 months. AAoA 1.3 years, in which Amex backdating plays no role.

No baddies, and no history other than CCs. When I buy a home I can put 20%+ down, so I'm not worried about not having installment history.

That's pretty tight length of credit. I think you should relax for 6 months or so. Seems like a smart move.

While there's always some risk, the source of risk is usually from some behavior other than opening an account every 3 months (like opening an account every three months and then maxing out all your cards, etc etc) but there's certainly some more risk than normal I'd say. I'd be surprised though.

How many inquiries?

BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus

Discover - It

I've had it since December 2014. I can't remember when I did the last mass extinction to be honest. I didn't really think much about credit cards for about 10 months. Then I decided I'm going to travel and do the things I want to do. We don't know how long the ride here is so we might as well make the most of it, however long that is.

I don't recall the starting limit, I believe it was 5500 or 6500, it's been a while now. My guess is 5500. Just a year ago it was sitting at like 9.5k. I was thinking if I could get it to 10k I'd really feel like I had something with Discover. I honestly never imagined it would be at what it is now, let alone without a single hard pull to get there and in a year's time. Really it's been over the last 6 or so months the increases have been in huge chunks - prior to that if I got 1k I was happy (and they declined more than approved). Once I got it to 10.5k then they started giving about 5k a pop.

I honestly can't tell you the rhyme or reason of it, all I can tell you is how it went for me.

And in honor of Takeshi, I want to mention it might have something to do with income and credit profile.
